Good job the rate of fires in EVs is lower than ICE. Am I doing it right? Oh wait…
Are they though? It would be interesting to see the data, and if they are comparing like for like with age, etc.

Also, a fire in an ICE vehicle can be remedied very quickly and repaired well if caught quickly. I am pretty sure that’s not the case if their is a battery fire on an EV
The US looked at *crash* data and from the stats the probability of a vehicle fire after a fatal crash is ICE>Hybrid>EV **BUT** the stats are going to be very problematic as all EV's are going to be (relatively) new (<10 years) while the ICE could be old and badly maintained. Equally, the numbers are too low to be representative.

Forbes said:
“The NTSB data said that after 41 fatal collisions involving BEVs, 1 caught on fire (2.44%). The NTSB data said that after 20,315 fatal collisions involving gasoline vehicles, 644 caught on fire (3.17%). The NTSB data said that after 543 fatal collisions involving gasoline hybrid vehicles, 12 caught on fire (2.21%),” Conway said.

“But 41 crashes vs 20,315 crashes vs 543 crashes make it statistically irresponsible to compare these numbers. For example, if there was a 42nd crash with an EV and it caught on fire then it would be 4.76% of EVs or double the rate of hybrids. Until the sample size is the same and significant we just can’t say which will be worse or not,” Conway said.
The potential fire risk with EV's is *NOT* however from crashes. Fires from crashes make up a tiny number of EV fires, the vast majority are while the car is merely sitting parked (equal chances between charging and not-charging). So beware those using the crash stats to claim everything is fine and dandy.

Oh, and finally, most car fires (in the UK) are from arson (65%). The type of motive power is irrelevant when it's gone up in flames because some toe-rag has torched it to hide the evidence! Again have to be really careful about those kind of cases distorting the statistics.

One assumes that Barry or Cletus, who would typically set their old car alight due to using a match to check the fuel level, will eventually move to EVs and be setting those alight when drilling the holes for the after market Sparkos?

Either way, there seems plausible validity to suggesting that EVs aren't yet old enough to be in the hands of the folk who seem to be more consistently involved in unplanned incendiary incidents?

I haven't. YouTube like to feed me left wing propaganda mainly. I do get a lot of Peter Zeihan's content though I suspect this is because I know him through work and YouTube has been rifling through my contacts or emails. I quite like his miserable outlook though. biggrin

Not as bad as his mate laowhy86, jeez that's intense.
I used to love their videos when they lived in China, talking about the different regions, why there are no birds in China, the time they got alcohol poisoning after 2 beers, why the Chinese don't swim in the sea, etc. but since they moved to America it's all got a bit "China bad, mmkay?"

They only became anti after they were persecuted.

The main issue when putting out EV fires is that they can spontaneously re-combust weeks after being put out the first time whereas once an ICE fire is out then it's not going to go up in flames again.

It seams total madness put water on EV fires, not only electric shock risk, water and lithium can also cause toxic gas release. I always considered a fire blanket for cars/lorries a better solution.
