RE: Mercedes R63 AMG | Spotted

It's an interesting thing, the R-Class and I don't mind the styling, for an MPV anyway.
I for one though would rather get a W211 E55 or E63 estate with the pop up boot seats (can't remember if they offered the extra seats in the 63) if I were going down that route. Yes, the R will have more space and be more practical but the majority of the practicality an MPV like that brings can be brought by an estate, despite what the current SUV market implies... Plus, it also looks a lot better doing it(!)

A friend (genuinely a powerfully built director!) had a new facelifted R Class, a 3.0d, he really liked it. It was a great car, actually 6 seater is helpful in the not uncommon scenario of a family of 4 plus granny and grandpa, for example.
Fun though it is, I struggle with the notion of an AMG version of a practical car... I wondered about replacing my CLS Shooting Brake with a 63, but I've a nagging feeling that most of the time a 6 cyl diesel is all you need, and it will cost half as much to run doing the same stuff at the same speed.

It's a reflection on how the oxymoron of the 'performance SUV' has become normalised that this R63 is described as 'barmy', when compared to those ludicrous devices, it is the far more rational machine. It will have a lower centre of gravity and better aerodynamics than any Range Rover SVR or Cayenne Turbo S, two things that a real performance engineer would kill for. And within a comparable size of car, much better accommodation for passengers and/or luggage alongside that drivetrain.
Is there a record going for the quickest six-up lap of the Ring?
Incidentally there's a great recent Readers' Cars thread on an R500L here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Exactly this, why is this sort of frowned upon where as an SUV equivalent is seen as better? Thi is the superior car unless you actually need to go off road, surely. Is there a record going for the quickest six-up lap of the Ring?

I have seen a fare few Rs around and they're quite imposing, I actually quite like them though never really needing seven seats an estate is then always preferable.

I loved the R-Class, it is a shame that Mercedes stepped out of the luxury people carrier market, a niche that they invented and owned.
... and hardly anyone in Europe was really interested in, at least not in the way Germans did it. There is a very small market for it, as seen by the imported JDM Toyota and Nissan people carriers here in the UK, but you need to make a people carrier not a car that sort of is one but it isn't 100% convinced it wants to be one. Where are the sliding doors? Captain's seats?Another thing was that afaik R class was its own platform and shared very few components with other cars in the range so it was more expensive to make.
Also - 34k? Good luck to you sir. You might have to wait quite a bit till inflation catches up to that level.
Love it, I genuinely considered one over an E63 Estate/Audi RS6 ages ago, just for the sheer lunacy of it But WHY has the author regarded this as anything like an SUV? It was/is an MPV/PC - how can you even mention this and an SUV in the same breath, I have no idea. Rare as hens teeth, and haven't seen one up for sale in years. I'm not really in market for one now (though would still love one!), but yeah....... that price is a bit spicy (though I did guess on opening the article that it would be around £30k).
I had this car, traded in my E55 AMG as I wanted 4-wheel drive (and the extra load carrying was very welcome). Awesome vehicle and I very much enjoyed it.
I traded it away because of the tyres. Being so heavy, driving this in a spirited way meant that the tracking would not hold, and tyre wear increased. The tyres were hard to come by, usually having to be ordered from Mercedes dealership with several days notice as they would come from Germany, or simply not come at all.
Several GL / GLS later, the E came with 4-wheel drive and I went back to the E63 AMG.

Is this the same car?

CC also sold what appears to be the same car in 2022 (although they claim the colour to be different in this sale)

Unless the Malaysian Prime Minister owned TWO of them.
Gotta be the same car. A real curio and I'd have guessed at a £15-20k kind of price, but looking at the CC final prices it's achieved in the last 18 months then it clearly is a £30k+ car, which really does surprise me!https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2006-mercedes-...

This is Tanzanite Blue, which is more blue than black -- also, look at the spacing on the R63 badge which appears to be correct in its spacing

additionally, the 20" alloys

The 20-inch alloy wheels are finished in body-coloured accents originally specified from ‘Designo Mercedes’ by the original owner.

The Duke of London example is recognisable to me as Individual Chromite Black -- therefore the same as LB56 EOH

Chromite is a more black/greyish blue than Tanzanite. Having seen it in the metal, I think that it's rather nice -- how do I know? I've recently purchased an R500L in Individual Chromite -- and samoht linked to my RC thread on pg1 with some kind words about it*.
The second Collecting Cars vehicle -- LB56 EOH -- has poor spacing for the R63

as has the Duke of London car

and also has silver wheels (not two tone)

They've also been serviced at different garages -- but both may have been also owned by the seller who seems to own a third!

Furthermore, the owner of this R63 currently has two other R63 AMGs; one as his daily driver and one as his father’s second car. This ex-Malaysian Prime Minister car was purchased as a long-term investment due to the low mileage. However, a relocation has reduced storage and driven the sale.
So, there are two similar W251 R63 AMG with recent market precedent that probably won't be driven any longer, unlike my R500L with also has seven seats, as opposed to the maximum of six which were offered (to the best of my knowledge) for the 2006/7 model year. *cheque's in the post
The R63 is an undeniably cool car, it's hideous but incredibly practical and comfortable. The idea of lugging the family around in comfort with a 6.2 V8 under the bonnet appeals greatly.
That said, For this price you just wouldn't. If it was closer to the likes of a similar era E/CLS63 then I could almost see it but it's a no from me.

Perhaps not -- here is the owner who held three at one time and sold them off via CC

It's very confusing, that's for sure. The two CC listings have identical service descriptions, including mileage (as well as matching VINs). There's either been some copy'n'pasting going on, or they are the same vehicle. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CbP0mduqvN0/?utm_so...
