brunton seems to still have farm outbuildings on it, surely you couldn't use it?
It used to have a sign up that said something along the lines of: Learner drivers welcome, 40 mph speed limit. Drivers enter at their own risk. No idea if that's still there. As far as I know, it is still used as farm land. There were often cattle there when I used to go. Its also still used by a parachuting club so the main runway was always off limits.I used to go up to Brunton with my dad years ago when I was 15 and learn to drive! It's a massive place, so long as people weren't behaving like complete idiots there were no problems. The track marked out was used for R/C cars and not karts.
Shame it is locked now, I think it is owned by the Duke of Northumberland? I think the parachute club got kicked off too? Anyone know?

I went looking for one a while ago, and stumbled accross RAF Ouston on the military road near Harlow Hill.
When i drove down the access road, i came round a corner and there were a load of army type guys standing with GUNS!!! I've never seen a gun before, so promptly turned round and hooned off.
Anyone know what they get up to in there?

Found this about Ouston on Secret Bases (a conspiracy theorists dream website)
Back in Corsham, also notice the presence nearby of RAF Colerne, just north of Corsham, again sometimes referred to as a "disused airfield", but which is actually a key signals analysis unit, formerly 1001 Signals Unit.
Again, Paradigm Services, the company running Oakhanger, also has a Skynet 5 satellite ground terminal presence at Colerne. It is situated within the Azimghur Barracks, adjoining the airfield.
Colerne is surely linked to RAF Rudloe Manor, if not also the Corsham Computer Centre. It is also rumoured that the airfield at Colerne may be used to shuttle VIPs in and out of the CCC. Another former Royal Navy Stores Depot can be spotted at a remote corner of the Colerne site.
Over on the northern side of the M4 motorway you'll find Buckley Barracks - better known as RAF Hullavington. In March 2005, the old airfield runways were used for a major anti-terrorism exercise which tested the UK's defences against a theoretical attack on a nuclear warhead transportation convoy (pictured below) travelling from AWE Aldermaston up to RNAD Coulport in Scotland.
On their regular warhead runs, the convoys use another "disused airfield" for overnight stops. Consider former RAF Ouston at Harlow Hill near Corbridge in Northumberland, alongside Hadrian's Wall and close to the main A69 road. On top of one of the old runways, you can spot the huge secure vehicle compound (further below) at what is now referred to as Albemarle Barracks (often misspelt Albermarle).

I've just wasted hours going through that lot haha! The airfield side of Albemarle is pretty much unused now there has been a Kart track on there and once a year the Turnbull Trophy rally uses the airfield for a tarmac event(there are some photos of the event here http://www.ianhardy.net/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId... but you can't see much of the airfield in the shots) The secure area which was used to store the missiles on route to Scotland is usually used for the service area.
In this photo you can see the barracks to the south of the airfield and we normally access the area at a gate to the north east of where the runways cross but as the barracks is fully operational, security is pretty tight so i wouldn't advise anybody to try and gain unauthorised access or you may just get shot

Cheers
Ian

Back in the early 90's I used to fly remote control model aircraft on the runways at Albermarle. the secure compound at the runway intersection was formed before RC flying ceased. a high frequency transmitter was placed there hence cesation of RC flying
This area forms the outer edge of a low level practise area which takes in the ranges at otterburn and also SpadeAdam which is the european facility for nato anti radar and counter measures training.
Our days of moving nuclear warheads around the country are long gone. All our warheads are now in the care of the scottish in underwater tin tubs we call submarines.
Spade adam is an interesting thing to google, pan up the map from greenhead on the A69. this was the old Rocket testing facility for Blue streak. Early ideas were to test fire missiles from here and ditch them in morecambe bay. Someone however decided people living in carlisle might find it a bit risky so they went to woomera in Australia for firing instead.
Neil.

Tranwell - near Morpeth - used to be bombers and fighters based there in the second world war.
I remember in late 70's/early 80's it was a popular sunday gathering spot for bikers, hundreds of us would meet there and race up and down the track,it was great fun until the police made the owner of the land block the access from the main road.

Allegedly the secure compound is still used when there are road transfers of nuclear material, you still get the odd convoy around the Tyne Valley though I haven't seen one myself for a couple of years.Gassing Station | North East | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
