Mclaren MP4 12C launch party Pics - Dusseldorf 17th June
Discussion
The styling is derivative and so bland. Styling by commitee. Looks like the Ascari KZ1, another car that struggled for a personality, and ended up being a join the dots bland fest. You can spot those cars a mile off. It is possible to still have good looking designs nowdays, lambo gallardo, aston v8 vantage, audi r8, all look what they are, love them or hate them, they dont try to be something else, and in the flesh look awesome. That car IS ron dennis.
The pressed carbon tub is the future. We'll see it trickle down from supercars to sports cars and then to expensive saloons, mid-range and so on. Moving from being a performance measure to an economy one.
I was at a talk last week where a government advisor complained that the airline industry had embraced light weight for fuel saving, the motor and rail industries must do the same.
Just the patent pool might make McLaren.
Simon.

Is there any luggage/stowage space under the front? The back seems to be full of stylised exhaused pipes, so nothing is going in there.
The 12C has a fairly large open area in the front of the car for the boot. This is aided by the fact that the radiators are side mounted behind the passenger compartment.
In this Bloomberg video with Alan Foster at the MTC you get to see under the bonnet of a finished 12C.

+1I'm sure its a wonderful driving machine but for the money they will ask for it it should have game-changing design. The Audi R8 was shockingly radical and really had brave design elements when it came out, this looks like it could be a design from 10 years ago.

well said streetrod you hit the nail on the head and to illustrate your point here´s a pic of something that was parked outside.

Dated, I think not!
To be honest your right. In a way the new MP4 is a bit of a let down compared to the F1!Dated, I think not!
The F1 was built almost 20 years ago and in my opinion the MP4 despite being a great looking car just isn't as different from the rest as the F1 was. In the same year (91) it beat the Jaguar XJ220 and the Bugatti EB110 by a whole 22mph top speed.
Will the MP4 do be a leader in it's field like the F!?

We'll have to wait till the journos get hold of it, but i'm gonna stick my neck out and say it'll probably blow everything else out of the water for driving envolvement.
Power to weight ratios based on the preliminary details released by McLaren seem to give the 12C a pretty good edge with what will be its greatest rival.
Ferrari 458 Italia:
562 horsepower
398 lb-ft of torque (80% avail at 3,250 rpm)
3,042 lbs dry weight
McLaren MP4-12C:
592 horsepower
443 lb-ft of torque (80% avail at 2,000 rpm)
2,866 lbs dry weight

When the car was launched they talked about jobs in the area etc etc. Sadly they've just signed a contract with a Austrian company to make that carbon middle part. You know, the part they banged on about how great it was, throughtout the cars launch and how it can be made in 4 hours.
