On the Apple I-phones, the flash doesn't seem to work when in HDR mode, any reason.

Because HDR photos are created by taking at least 3 photos, the phone decides on an exposure for the picture and then takes 3 photos, one at that exposure and one less exposed (makes the lighter spots darker, i.e. seeing through the window behind someone) and one more exposed (darker spots lighter, i.e. under the spoiler on a car) usually they're under/over exposed by the same amount, they are then recombined to produce a photo that in theory should produce a picture with more viewable area as in effect it has a hybrid exposure.
I think the reason it isn't used is because the flash is because the HDR in the iphone isn't that complex and by introducing more light into the scene it may not be able to get a great enough exposure range to have an effect on the image.
Or it's something silly like the flash can't go off in quick enough succession to keep up with the camera and if the camera slowed down then you would have movement issues from both holding it and anything moving in frame.

How does Apple manage to make so many people happy, nay ecstatic, about being right royally ripped off by Apple?
Because the constant and never-ending advertisements give across the impression that anything other than Apple is inferior. Sure they're simple to use and very intuitive on the surface, but I find them incredibly frustrating in that it's Apple's way or no way. People talk about their customer service being brilliant and cite examples of people having iPhones and iPads replaced at Apple stores without argument. What they don't realise is that Apple charges so much that they likely make more than 200% profit on the devices so can afford to do this for a few people.I also despise the way Apple shamelessly steal ideas from other companies, declare their 'thing' pointless or unnecessary, repackage it, declare it the best thing ever and almost get to the point where they say they invented it. At one time the iPhone 4's screen was perfect and there was no reason to have a bigger screen. Suddenly the 5 had one, then it was 'the perfect size'! and there was no need for a bigger one. And now the 6 has a bigger one still! Guess what? It's a great size screen they say!

Why do so many people feel the need to try to constantly chastise owners of Apple products, and do it in a way that makes it sound like they have an inferiority complex?TheLordJohn said:
I'd be surprised of they only made 200% per unit...!
They're a public company - you can download their annual report and check.I think they have gross margin by product line too.
Also the tech blogs tend to do a "tear down" of any new launch so they can estimate the manufacturing cost fairly easily since they are commodity products inside (or close to it).
I think part of the "you're being ripped off" issue is simply because they are only one company and hence do a product refresh roughly once a year.
On launch day the products are generally fairly competitive.
However, within 6 months LG, Samsung, Huawei or HTC will have something newer which makes the Apple look a little outdated but it won't be refreshed again for another 6 months.

Yes, Apple's marketing strategy makes me nauseous and their products are somewhat overpriced. However, my Nexus 5 feels cheaply made (wasn't even that much cheaper that the equilvalent iPhone at the time), crashes all the time and I've had to factory reset it countless times to 'try and fix issues'. Can't remember the last time I had to restart my iPhone/iPad other than a software update... The build quality on Apple products is pretty good! (I am aware of bendgate haha)

I guess YMMV because I have a Nexus 5 from November 2014 and it was half the price of an iPhone and works perfectly!Greshamst said:
I've noticed since it's got colder, that the pantograph on the overground Thameslink trains crackle constantly and spark.
Why don't they do this when it's warm?
In cold weather, the cables shrink, increasing the tension and lifting them up slightly. This creates more air gaps between them and the pickup as the train rattles along. The air is also drier as cold air can't hold as much moisture as warm. Perfect conditions for little bolts of "lightning" between cable and pantograph. Why don't they do this when it's warm?

You're confusing markup and margin.

How come were can see the international space station when it comes over? I'm no expert, but I don't think its got the need for headlights, so why does it appear lit up to us down here?
Big hot yellow thing over there -> lots of light coming off it, reflects off other things.

I didn't think there would be enough on the ISS to reflect that much sunlight?
