You missed my main point. The ethnic mix of Australia is quite varied NOW. However, for the first 100 years of its existence, the settlers MAINLY came from the British Isles - many of them deported convicts and their minders, as we all know.
That is markedly different to the waves of multi-national immigrants that have been part of American history for half a millennium. That made a big difference to how the immigrants viewed themselves and looked after themselves when they arrived - many sticking together in their ethnic groups for generations - usually for security and self preservation.
Since World War 2 there has been a marked increase in immigrants into Australia from other European countries (such as Italy and Greece) - but that is all fairly recent history. By the time they started arriving, Australia already had a fairly strong national identity, largely based on old Anglo-Saxon/Celtic values and culture.
It's not only the source of immigrants that creates a culture, but the patterns and timing of the immigration waves.

So nice to have a genuinely mannerly debate. They are becoming quite rare on PH.
Thanks efbe.
Possibly this thread is one of the most civilised on PH because the angry insult hurlers have decided they'd rather be banned than be polite. Thanks efbe.
And the mods granted them their wish.

Come to think of it, I don't think he's read a book, ever.
