Lotus Turbo Challenge.
The name reminded me of Turbo Esprit on the speccy:

the "Driver" or GTA of its day, great big 3d city to drive around at will, with traffic lights, one way streets, car chases, and you could run over pedestrians and people up ladders. Impressive stuff back in '86.

That perspective seems very odd, are you on the 5th floor of a building with a car steering wheel in front of you? hehe

OMG, how had I forgotten this?

Ant attack 3d. Proper 3d that you could rotate (only through 90 degrees, but hey). In 1983. In 48K.

I really liked 'G-Police' if we're talking fairly early 'Pentium' era games. Riddled with flaws but lush to look at... but then I am a fiend for all things Cyberpunky.

G-Police is a download game on Playstation Network, so will play on PSP and PS3, and I think on the Vita now. I think its £3 or £4 ish. I haven't downloaded it yet, but I might give it a go.
G-Police. £1.99 on PSN for the PS1 version of the game, playable on a PS3, PSP or Vita. I just pressed the buy button on it to see what it's like hehe

Grand Prix Legends, such a step on from F1GP2. I remember the first PC I had for it couldn't run with full detail or at the back (without visible cars turned down to about 3 in front 1 behind), but then I got a new PC and they started updated the cars and tracks to match smile

Original cars

Comparison old and modded.

Modded cars
Great game. Handling was very good best I have experienced so far. It was that difficult I remember my dad couldn't get a car round the track.
I remember not being able to get the car around the circuit either, the Ferrari sounded fantastic though.
Yes, it was apparently quite accurate. I was very impressed by the way that, when you took off at the Nordschleife, you had to reduce the throttle to stop the car rotating as a result of the engine torque. That shows impressive attention to detail. I recall I once managed a lap of Monza... biggrin

On a similar note, Richard Burns Rally on the PS2

Amazing graphics when I owned it at the time, but most striking was the difficulty and realism - as soon as I upped the pace beyond 6/7 10ths, I'd inevitably end up on my roof down a ditch laugh

Get it on PC. Still the most realistic Rally Sim out there.

I had the Xenon 2 'Megablast' edition for the Megadrive. Basically a remastered version of Xenon 2. Awesome graphics and great gameplay. I loved being able to upgrade your craft with new weapons.

I also remember Deathtrap Dungeon having awesome graphics. Doesn't look so hot now but I loved it back in the day. T Rex boss!

And who could forget Kelly Brook advertising the game with a photoshoot at the London Dungeon, as seen on the back page of CVG?

This was also a superb production in the post-Resident Evil world. It had some great graphics and dinosaur models and some cool lighting effects!

The Splatterhouse games had some fantastic enemy design. Shame the remake was pants.

I also remember loving this and thinking the graphics were pretty cool. It hasn't aged well but at the time I loved it:

Another old classic, impressive graphics and innovative gameplay:

And for a masterclass is graphics, artwork and atmosphere:

And from the sequel:

Some great games there, the Nightmare Creatures games, NC1 in particular, were masterclasses in design and atmosphere. The burning cathedral at the end of the first one was mindblowing.

A vote here for Future Cop LAPD on the PS1 from me;

These days it looks very boxy and plain, but in it's day it was a visual smorgasbord, attacks from above, rockets flying around the screen, explosions everywhere it was wonderful.

And you could play it all in co-op as well. The transforming vehicle and weapon choices added depth to. One of the classics of the era!

It was a Lotus Esprit bus. Very rare in the UKlaugh

I remember playing this on the Spectrum though & thinking how fantastic the graphics were!

I think it was a company called Ultimate who made the "must have" games. Atic Atac & Sabre Wulf were ace & then when Knight Lore came out it was like an arcade game!

I had a break after that until the SNES came out. Super Mario World was so much more important than A-levels.

Had an Amstrad console for a bit (can't even remember why) but that had some nice graphics (car game, Robocop and Pang stick in my mind).

Got properly back into gaming after seeing Destruction Derby on the Playstation - I did honestly think graphics wouldn't get any better than this!

Final Fantasy 7 & Metal Gear Solid proved me wrong!

I'm 40 next year & I'm still amazed by the graphics of some games. I think it's because I've grown up with Atic Atac etc whereas todays kids see Skyrim etc as the norm. Red Dead Redemption was for me a "god that's gorgeous" moment.

Can't wait for the next 20 yearssmile

Just had a go of this tonight (just has the first zone)

http://www.s2hd.com/

And reminded me the original (Sonic 2) has one of the first games that blew me away with it's graphics. At the time I think we had a Commodore 64 at home, so you can imagine that Megadrive was like a supercomputer in comparision.

It's depressing though - since then I was a Sonic fan but since Sonic 3 & Knuckles it's gone steadily downhill... frown

That was one of the very first PS games to use the dualstick controller as well.

I'm currently playing Doom 2 on XBLA (on Ultra Violence mode obviously). THat looked incredible back in the day, but whilst it's incredibly dated now the core gameplay is as good as ever

Not only was it one of the first PS games to use the dual stick controller, but the only car in it was the Porsche Boxster! I had it back in the day but I don't remember enjoying it all that much.

Now DOOM, that is a different story. I had the DOOM/DOOM2/Final DOOM pack for the PS1. Loved them. I'm currently playing through the DOOM 3 BFG edition for the 360 and I'm not really enjoying it. Superb graphics (for the time) but the gameplay is a bit pump. I am looking forward to getting DOOM 3 out of the way so I can get started on the old DOOM games! DOOM 3 did look amazing when it came out though.
