Last ever episode tonight. Not because it's rubbish, but because they can't be arsed doing any more.
I hate it when people (writers I mean) say "so sorry it has to end... I'll miss everyone bla bla bla" ... when they're the one's in control so they don't have to end it. Particularly with British shows (where 6 episodes seems like 100 from the U.S).
Mini rant over.

I think Crook will be acutely aware from his experience on The Office that leaving the audience wanting more, yet providing a proper loose-ends-all-tied-up ending is the way to do it.I hate it when people (writers I mean) say "so sorry it has to end... Unless you're onto something like Only Fools and Horses, with the potential to be consistently excellent for many, many series, then it's better to be short and sweet and sadly missed, rather than fizzle quietly out in Series 4-6.

American shows tend to have teams of full-time writers.I hate it when people (writers I mean) say "so sorry it has to end... MC is more an actor than a writer, so I suspect he feels it would be too difficult to sustain. Also a show like Detectorists would lose something if it went on for ages; and the stories would become weaker and less memorable.

That is the bittersweet glory of Britcoms. Many a great Britcom ended it early, thanks to the fact a lot are the child of a writer, or a partnership, from real experiences, not a hack team churning out endless years of 22 eps, which the vast majority of Yankcoms do. Funny you mention OFAH, that's one of the few Britcoms that falls into the US trap, it had a natural end with the watch story, it wasn't half as good as it used to be, but then it was stretched thin for a return.Unless you're onto something like Only Fools and Horses, with the potential to be consistently excellent for many, many series, then it's better to be short and sweet and sadly missed, rather than fizzle quietly out in Series 4-6.
The Detectorists, will remain a timeless classic, like Fawlty Towers or Early Doors. One only has to look at Big Bang Theory to see how horribly weak the current fare is to 5 years ago.
