Ultra rare mk 1 Escort at upcoming auction
Discussion
I detest the RS2000 stripes as much now as I did then. The Mark 1 Escort always looked a bit odd to me with a heavy rear quarter and side windows that are too small. The RS2000 stripes just make it worse with a weird wasp waisted look. Mexico decals were far better but really, none at all is the way to go, or just pin stripes.
Olympic blue - f
k me. They should have left than on a base model Cortina or a panda car. Nasty!

Since when have black Mk.2 RS2's been rare....?
I’m guessing he means now that many of them no longer exist, rather than build numbers.aeropilot said:

My old solicitor used to have a black/black Custom, T reg from memory. He bought it new from Norman Reeves in Uxbridge, with full Group 1 engine kit fitted on delivery, plus a LSD. The engine, despite the Group 1 kit was never 'quick' in his opinion, and as he was one of the top rally Nav's in my motor club, in around 1983/4 he sent the engine off to Neil Brown for a full rebuild and it was definitely 'quick' after that
He kept it for nearly 15 years, and when he sold it, it still only had about 40k miles on it and it was still mint.

Nice straight looking car, correct interior, steelies etc. Only downside is the glossy too bright a blue repro decals, but that's a minor gripe.
Not cheap, given its a private sale.

Prefect example of what the original satin finish to the stripes looked like in period, and why all the repro makers get it wrong with the glossy ones they sell.Funnily enough, I met up with Phil Elby a few weeks ago, and we were both moaning about that, and he'd been doing some work on a relatively recently restored RS2 and the owner was adamant that the shiny decals/stripes were correct (said owner had never seen original ones) so it goes to show how 'facts' get distorted through time as those that know get fewer and fewer.
Taken off the road in 81, so only 7 years ago, and 97k miles in that time, so it lasted well up to that point considering many were very shagged by that amount of use.
Also unusual to see a base model Mex with optional factory RS alloys, which were likely fitted new as only option.
