What sort of tank range are people seeing from the 5JJ R1?
Daft question I know for a Superbike but I need a reasonable amount of mileage from a tank ... ideally 140 + (motorway)
Get between 115 and 130 miles before light comes on and then you've got 5.5 litres of useable fuel to go after that (you've actually almost got 6 but inlet cannot get last bit) so it will go a long way on reserve.Daft question I know for a Superbike but I need a reasonable amount of mileage from a tank ... ideally 140 + (motorway)
5JJ and earlier bike 4XV have same tank and I'm fairly sure same sender. Tank is stamped 5EB from memory under fuel cap so it was first used on a different Yam first which might explain why it doesn't sit flush on the frame rails (.i.e. you can see a bit of the air box / carbs). WTF is a 5EB then?
Trundling around chilled out I've seen 53mpg, normal use is 42-45.

I seem to recall '02 is still the carb model, changing to FI with the facelift in '03. Carb models have a silver frame and FI has a black frame. Same with the R1, which changed in '02 at some point.
I've had a '00 R1 and currently have a '02 FI model. The FI model is much better in my opinion, however that could well be attributed to the fact the '02 is a minter and the '00 was a bit of a dog.
Have I read this wrong?I've had a '00 R1 and currently have a '02 FI model. The FI model is much better in my opinion, however that could well be attributed to the fact the '02 is a minter and the '00 was a bit of a dog.
03 changed to FI yet you have an 02 FI
They did change to FI in 2002.

talking of mpg , my mint low mileage 4xv used to average 35mpg and my (now 12000 mile) 5vy , just serviced mollycoddled etc only gets 30-35mpg ......how do get almost 50 mpg??
Are we sure we're all working it out in the same way? I could be wrong and I do it mainly from memory (4.456 litres to the gallon and all that). When I fill up its generally 1 litre per 10 miles or maybe a touch more. So 12 litres to do 120 miles is 44mpg? I might have remembered the US gallon figures and been cocking it up.30mpg for road use sounds horrific. My 98 R1 doesn't do much less on track use (23-25mpg) and I don't hang about looking at the scenery. Here's the 4XV chasing Piers Hutchins around Portimao at 2m 03s per lap or therabouts.

Mine should be worse than standard as its got the fuel needles raised a bit and bigger main jets.
Perhaps its the mollycoddling that does it! I had a minty low mileage 5VY for awhile alongside my earlier bike and it was definately tighter but much thirstier on fuel and oil - most odd.

just the tyres would need to worry about but with 2CT's should be good for 6k +
If you could get 6k+ out of 2CT's on an R1 you really aren't trying hard enough.

They make fine commuters, I did 200 miles a day on a 5PW for months. Just slap some PR2s on or whatever the equivalent is now and get 90% of the performance for a shed lot more miles. Worked for me.
Exactly my thinking ...
I can't be arsed with having two bikes ... already have to maintain my own and the Wife's bike!
