I work at a Longlife exhaust centre on Saturdays - we're always getting asked how to make diesels louder. One customer asked us to make his Honda Civic 2.2CDTi sound like an Impreza.....

Another was SO convinced he Mondea would sound great with a straight-through system that he told us to build it, despite our assurance that it wouldn't sound that different. We removed the entire exhaust at the cat and called him into the workshop - we started it up and to be fair, it was a bit louder than standard, but nowhere near enough for the customer. We then pointed out that we hadn't actually built anything and had just removed everything after the cat - he finally got the point

I often try to explain to customers that an exhaust sound isn't about volume, its about tone - my son's diesel Alfa 159 has a twin-exit system and (for a 4-pot diesel) sounds quite tuneful - its certainly not loud though

TBH, the only way to get any kind of desirable sound from a derv is to buy something with more than four pots - the Alfa / Fiat 5-pot is tuneful (but thirsty). Lots of V6s can be made to be a bit growly and JLR V8s are quite nice.

OP should probably get a VW V10 or even an Audi V12

A speaker playing fake engine noise down the exhaust pipe? Considering the marvelous automotive developments we have had in the last 50 years, does anyone else find this development incredibly depressing?

I can see the future...

BWM boggo spec: Diesel 4-pot with no fake engine noise

BMW mid spec: Diesel 4-pot with fake V6 sound speaker and a cup holder.

BMW M-sport: Diesel 4-pot with fake V8 sound speaker and an M badge.

...wait, the don't already do this, do they?
Its available across the VAG range, for example on the GTD with Sport and Sound Pack

Its awesome, who needs AMG now? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6bl-oRfY8w

Why bother? It will end up sounding like an old tractor. Sell it and buy the equivalent petrol model. A straight six petrol BMW with the right exhaust will sound cloud9. The diesel never will.

I wonder if there's also a market to make a V8 AMG sound like a diesel 4 pot. No? Thought not.

I can believe it my mate has it on his SQ5 & I couldn't believe how good it sounds in & out of the car, OP if you want a decent sound then this is what you're looking for.

It sounds OK because it's playing a synthesized sound .... The SQ5 has the 'sound actuator' or whatever they call it. It's the loud speaker in the exhaust. I couldn't do it.

But it's in many, many cars now so we probably have no choice in the years to come.

Some fascinating reading here:

The external sound generator "silmulates" a large-volume engine... Wow.

I'm with you on this but when my mate came round with his SQ5 I was genuinely surprised at how well it sounded for a false system, he didn't fit the speaker in the car though.

I'm actually surprised it has a fake sound system fitted. Must have sounded bloody awful standard.

If you wanted a nice or interesting exhaust note, you bought the wrong car.

It's a bit like asking which wig would best suit your goldfish.
Correct
Only an fool would spend money on trying to change the sound of the exhaust on their derv.

It's i pressive in its way. It drones and booms on over run and pops and bangs on gear changes. When I heard it I simply couldn't understand how a diesel could make some of those noises and that sent me googling to try and work out what was going on. They try very hard to avoid saying 'the exhaust noise is produced synthetically and played via a loudspeaker'. When I told my mate how his SQ5 made the noises it did, he was really pissed off as it had been sold to him as a 'sporty sounding exhaust'.

They're appearing everywhere now, we really won't get the choice not to have it soon.

Whilst you're never going to get a petrol-like noise from a diesel engine OP, you can certainly improve the noise the exhaust makes (regardless of what people say on here) by fitting a sports system - see below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkgvxfcrcTQ

ETA: just realised the video clip has already been posted however point still stands.

He fitted it, the standard Audi system was ok but nothing like it sounds now he's had it remapped & the system that was shown on page 1.
