These will double in price ten years, after they discontinue them... like the Z8 lol....
The Z8 was a retro/modern styled 5.0 V8 Convertible. How does that compare with the i8?
Moreover, at least in the US, the BMW Z8 is well known as one of the few modern cars that *never* depreciated.

The i8 meanwhile starts around $150,000 USD, and used 3-year old examples with just some mileage (like 25-30,000 miles) are half that.

I really, really like the way this looks, inside and out - as I did with the original coupe. But I put a deposit down someway before that was launched in the UK, and then pulled it when I drove one - for the money it was distinctly underwhelming to drive. Looking at it, it was certainly an event at the time, but driving it was most certainly not.

However I do love what iBMW is doing, and can't help thinking that they're moving things along at a steady pace (tortoise and the hare is probably not a fair reflection, but I'm sure you understand the sentiment) vs Tesla, and will probably get 'there' (wherever that is) first.

My mate has an i8 coupe and loves it. Lifetime MPG is well over 40. I've driven it and it feels far faster than the raw numbers would suggest. Throttle response is hysterically instant. I like it a lot - a very impressive piece of engineering by BMW with incredible looks to match. I'd happily have one.

I was in my dad's naturally aspirated 991 Carrera 4 Convertible recently (basically, the heaviest 911 configuration with the least powerful engine) and was surprised that it couldn't shake an i8 in a straightline, even going above 100 leptons.

I do think they look really cool, other than the bicycle front wheels!

I'm also super keen for the next Z4, wonder if this gives away any clues of what's coming with that whistle
You and me both.

I'm hopeful that this suggests that the Z4 will keep the buttresses from the concept car.

BMW lent me an i8 for 4 days in the summer- it was a revelation to me; very fast and put a smile on my face every mile. The roadster looks great imo and, as one other poster said, it's not all about the sound, it's about that connection with the outside world which makes convertibles so much fun.

sleep guess this is top of the food chain in respect to elitist German fashion mobils, still there will be plenty of sheep that'll buy it to match their minimalist villas and lifestyle choices, or for their hedge fund Californian offspring. Still if it means BMW keeps throwing cash at Rolls Royce in Chichester it is a good thing.

Well, that's an 'interesting' view smile

- is it just me that's left just stone cold by the i8? Nothing here to get me excited, no, not even if I could afford one.

I see this too is suffering from PTC, aka porker turtlehead constipation, that 911 is still rudely poking out of its rear end hehe

Just like the ones in a 911. I used them for luggage space which makes a Euro trip very feasible!

Not really a fan of these, the styling is kinda ok but it just feels like the cars main attribute is a lot of tech that will quickly obsolete.

Indeed, the one I had on test averaged 27mpg, barely better than my 5.0L Mustang. I don't supposed it had been plugged in before I tested it though.

I don't think the design of these has aged well. It seemed striking in the beginning as futuristic designs often do but then become 'of their time' quickly.
Funny, i had mine 2 years, drive it hard on occasions and averaged 48mpg over thousands of miles.

How are you supposed to eject your cassettes with the gear knob in the way like that.

Id take a Vantage roadster, im not into pretending to save the world like those pretentious 130kg Prius peddling SJW fatties.
What do you have against SJWs? Shouldn't everyone be into justice for all?

Most people I see driving i8s are young East Asian men (here in Canada anyway), and old blokes who just want to pose. They probably had an Aston or something before, and probably will again - they just wanted a car that was 'of the moment' and had cool doors (and perhaps a McLaren was too dear a price)

You sound like a monumental bellend with such judgemental views.

I just don't understand people who have this kind of attitude. So it's not for you? Doesn't mean someone should be ridiculed for liking it.
