The Leon & Boxster would make a great 2 car garage - FR for the daily commute, family & tip run duties plus the Boxster for the weekend.

I have a 2 year old FR (1.4 Petrol not diesel) with less than a 10th of the mileage but from the photos (which can hide some nasty things) it doesn't look any worse than mine - ie its warn its miles very,very well. Which bodes well for me as I'm intending on keeping mine for at least another 4 years.

The photos for the Boxster themselves are terrible (why not take some more? Maybe a question for the seller, but no major alarm bells) but the car looks honest for the age & mileage (which isn't silly for 16 year old car) - I've seen driver's seats looking more baggy on Boxsters with 100K less on clock.

I think these two are the extremes of high mileage purchases - not long out of warranty and hopefully one user ex-company/lease car which has been serviced on the button. Or 10 year old plus car which has done on average sensible miles every year and plenty of work done to it - if your after a weekend toy (not a hedge fund) at this kind of age, does the mileage matter? Surely its more about condition and what work has been done.

It's a new venture for me into the big miles car purchase but after getting to know about the car I was after (Audi A2) and hearing how typically reliable they are into big miles I was quite relaxed about going for a 134 thousand mile car.

Ownership brought to an abrupt end after a young lad slid in the snow crashing into it I now have a 175 thousand mile A2 replacement which runs so well thanks to on the button servicing and records to back it all up.

Confident it should see many more miles perhaps even the same again having it's origins in the PD 4 cylinder lump.

I used to run a heavily-modded Fiat Coupe 20VT as a daily - took it to 246,000 miles and then re-shelled it due to rust. However, the running costs were hefty, so I bought a cheap Alfa GT diesel, which now has 243,000 miles on it and has only let me down once (frayed battery earth cable wouldn't let it start)

The actual mileage is almost an irrelevance - its far more about how its done the miles and how it was maintained while it was doing them

I'd rather have a 150,000-miler with a good history and a caring previous owner, than something with 50,000 that's been used and abused with no care or mechanical sympathy

I have ran high mileage cars for years now. My current XJ6 X350 has 265k miles.

My 730Ld I sold last year had 300k miles, a recent E60 525d has 250k miles.

E39 M5 has 170k miles.

I always say: you're better off with a well-maintained, low-owner, high mileage car with evidence of good maintenance, rather than a 10-owner car with 70k miles and patchy history.

Bigger-engined cars cruising along at motorway speeds are not stressing the mechanicals at all. And as the article has outlined, they don't get to that mileage without various components being replaced along the way.

After a few years and a few cars this is the same conclusion I came to.

Bought a two previous owner twenty year old BMW car with 170k miles on last year. With a known full service history; and in effect talking to 50% of the owners when buying, it seemed more genuine than a lesser millage car that may have been clocked. I am very happy with the purchase and it drives/looks like a car that the previous owners have cared for.

There are some bargains out there with a few miles on.

Selling cars with high miles can be tricky as a lot of Joe Public do not appreciate the above. I also drive a diesel Merc with 230k miles on the clock. Great spec with much work done, but not of great value to many if I chose to sell. Thankfully it is going so well and is worth more to me than the market value that it will not be sold in a hurry.

Long life service intervals, stop start driving and owners who treat their vehicles like white goods is why a lot of modern cars do not break six figure mileage without significant expense.

Call me a sadist, but there's something gratifying about seeing a car taken to astronomical miles and it still running!

My record was a 2000 Peugeot 306 HDi - 186,000 miles before the head gasket let go and it just wasn't worth repairing (cost vs. value)

Current E91 318d is on 135k and climbing rapidly. Mostly motorway miles, FSH and being the 3rd owner - it appears to have been looked after. People comment how surprisingly tidy it is/how well it drives when I tell them the mileage!

Always buy on condition and history over mileage, I think we had a thread about this a year or so ago and most of us agreed that was the way to buy a car! Timing of the article is coincidental but I have just returned from having the Camper (Citroen Relay I converted last year) MOT'd, 239,484 miles and not one advisory!

Question for you all if I may, I have a 18 month old car which I am planing to keep for 10 years which will equate to around 300k. At present I pay for the dealer service plan to keep the warranty up to date however the oil change schedule is every 18,000 miles.

Would you,
1 - stick with the dealers warranty plan and scheduled oil changes
2 - stick with the dealers plan but do an additional oil change every 9,000 by either dealer (who was reluctant to do so when asked saying it’s not needed
3 - find a good independent garage but risk warranty issues down the line if dealer has not carried out works

i would stick with dealer while in warranty. (but also change oil every 9k myself)
then find a good indy
and still change oil every 9k myself with a pump leaving old filter in place.

Higher mileage cars can certainly make good buys but a point of order with regard to older cars "Not lasting".

Let's not forgot that 20 or 30 years ago used cars were routinely clocked and the real mileage was often considerably higher than the hapless owner believed.

Everything was pretty fine until it hit about 200k, and then lots of things started to go wrong all in the space of a short while.

It just sort of felt that that was how long they were designed to last....

I've just spent two weeks in Germany with my W124 - first ever European adventure. Old bloke came up to me one day in a car park - obvious language issue on both sides - but his words were clear - Best Car Ever Made ! He had owned one that he had taken past 1M Kms - his current one had 380k Kms - but he was in an X3 which he said was rubbish.
The only issue with 124s is tin worm - best I had seen (with 295k miles was a 320 which had been properly wax-oyled from new.
Mine went from 171k to almost 176k (miles) over the last two weeks ! All on knackered ARB bushes - one rear bulb - a litre of oil - and the throttle body needs a clean after the giant fog of oil seed rape pollen found its way everywhere.
Oh - and about 140 gallons of petrol.

I do rate our V70 as well - but the 124 has the bigger boot - customs on the way back asked to have a look - said ''thats a bit full - looks ok'' and waved us through laughlaugh

Meaning to comment on this for sometime - until september 25th last year ('17) I had an '04 plate Volvo V40 1.9d.
Fully loaded, everything worked, cruise, leccy seats etc. Until on that fateful day some tit in an audi decided to rear end me at 60 mph on the m4. Impact broke my drivers seat off the mounting. I'm still broken nearly 9 months later.

'Rooftop' as it was fondly known had 1 owner prior to me and only 336000 miles on the clock. Honestly ran like new and was faultless. Still miss it. Had full volvo history, including receipts down to all the old tyres!

Got a 120d coupe '09 plate now. 14k in 9 months, I plan on breaking it in soon..
