Hate to see BMW finally abandoning their brand identity completely with stuff like this and the upcoming 1 Series, but I guess that's what market pressures do...

18” front discs? fk me sideways. Is it down to weight, or are BMW trying to consign fade to the history books?

The discs for my M6 are around 15” (and £500), what are these going to cost? eek

18 inch front disks ? is that correct, what size are the wheels ?

Pretty obvious the next gen M135i/M140i will be this engine with the wick turned up.
As above - I can't believe that's true. Thats 457mm!
Calipers look identical to those on the M135i/M140i.
Even if they're using the larger disk size (from things like the M4 and the M Performance brake kit), they'd only be 370mm.
Clearly it's bks. No car has 18" discs.
They got it straight off the BMW UK press release: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/united-kingdom/arti...

Still bks though... got to be!
Likely the press release is written by someone too young to know what an inch is or how to do the simple maths to convert mm or cm to inches.

As pointed out already, they are very likely the same basic parts already used on the M140i etc.

I think it looks pretty good, inside the gear lever irks but the seats are decent.

The thing that bothers me about these engines is, that all of them will be 2.0 turbo 4’s and will all sound the same, there won’t be a USP anymore, for example,

M140i, straight 6 RWD.

RS3, 2.5 5 pot AWD.

A45 2.0 4 pot AWD

In that order and the rest are all 2.0 turbos with either AWD or FWD.

They’ll all end up so similar it will be a case of who prefers the badge instead of dynamics.

Chavtastic junk with that red interior. Looks like a tvrd roller skate.

Oh BMW, how do did you lose your way so badly?

Your cars were once defined by wonderful engines and unique interiors. Sadly, no longer the case.

Unless I'm mistaken, BMWs have always had pretty dreary engines across the board, but they've also had some gems in there as well.

The way I'm reading posts on here about BMW losing their way etc it would be as if they no longer make any straight 6 engines, which they do. It's just the names are changing. The most hilarious one was people moaning about the new 330i not having a straight 6 and it's sacrilegious etc....completely ignoring the face they make a 340i

as long as it funds more proper M cars then let the people who use cars as status symbols and mere transport buy away.

Still struggling to understand why there is so much absolute hatred towards a certain type of car. Do people get this much irrational hatred to other inanimate objects? Do you hate certain types of watches that annoy you this much? What about certain clothes? What about garden fences?

If you don't like it, fine....but there's so much hatred i really struggle to understand why. If you don't like it, don't buy it (this isn't just a dig at you binnerboy, just everyone who seems to get somewhat wound up by SUVs in general).

Not sure about the dreary bit. Some, such as the 2.0d units aren't exciting in isolation, but they compare well to their contemporary rivals and are decent enough.

I'm talking way-back-when, to the golden-era everyone seems to be going on about. For example, the E30 316i....

These cars dont photograph well but IMO they are good looking on the road.

I'm a bit sad to read about the loss of the 6 cyl on the 35 designation but the performance figures seem impressive.

What was bad about the E30 316i?

The engine was hardly great, which is what I was alluring too (if you see the 1st post in your quotes which I said smile )

I agree. All very lacklustre from both a power and noise viewpoint. You had to get into a 320i to feel something.
I've driven a new 530e with a 2.0 mill. The 5 series (my own F11 included) has become such a cosseted place to be that you mostly don't notice what the engine is doing / what it sounds like, but you enjoy the grunt from it. I'm guessing that there will be a performance exhaust for this particular X2 before too long - it'll be partly aimed at the people who outgrow their F20/F21 140i.

I don't mind the outside, I think it's the best of the X series. Sadly, the interior does nothing for me, especially that 6ft long gear knob which looks like it's off of a 90s Honda and just annoys me in the X1 and X2. Sad I know...

Oh, and that is really st badging up a 4-pot as an M car.
Yes, that's a terrible idea:

I had a few real M cars in the past. They were true drivers' cars. This thing is a sad ending for any meaning of the M designation.

The issue for me is not that it only has 4 cyls, but the fact that those cyls are crosswise at the front!

The reason BMWs used to handle well (even the not very sporty ones, like bogo 116i for example) is because they have a fundamentally good mass distribution. Slinging the engine cross the front, and even worse, sticking on the side of it a huge 4wd transmission is NOT a recipe for a nice car to drive.......

Was this the beginning of the end then? laugh

The M Sport badge is far removed from an M Car and has been for a long time, but then, you'd know that wouldn't you.... wink

I'm just frustrated that BMW have taken so long to produce an alternative for the A45, and in that time the Merc has evolved even further, so they're playing catch-up again. And has someone else has pointed out even the Audi RSQ3 has more grunt now.

Any comments about the sell-out of the AMG brand and why is an SUV considered an Audi RS? It's all just marketing boll*cks - suck it up and move on beer
