It's a bit like Boris saying he needs £1'000'000 a year just to make ends meet. And they say politicians are out of touch?
Says it all when journalists can trip up politicians nearly every time by simply asking "How much is a pint of milk" or "or how much load of bread" and they have no idea.

I'd say a single income family, couple of kids, on close to the minimum wage, say £8-£10 an hour or £18k a year to be relied upon.

That's just about managing, if you want proper poor then make that minimum wage job casual labour with no guaranteed hours a la A500Leroy. When I was an agency for a while there were some people who worked some properly punishing hours because they had to take work when they could get it. Think a 5pm till whenever-its-done (usually between 1am and 4am) job as a potwash at Madjeski, then up at 9 for his regular 9-2 shift at a tesco warehouse, 6pm start as another kitchen porter till whenever... Three days of that, then full shifts at the warehouse and one full day off a week. Poor bugger. I could just about manage two 10+ shifts in a row, and my day job but that was very rare for me, only managed it once or twice because a) I could barely function in my actual career until three days of normal sleep and b) you just couldn't get the hours. Not a problem for me, I was working for pocket money, but you can easily see how people fall for payday loans.
