I hated it originally but now I think it's actually quite a cool design
On the 30th September 2021, and in response to scores of posters losing their st over the looks in the first BMW iX 'subtle splendour' thread....

You'll get over it, just like everyone has for the past 50 years.
BMW design language has a very long history of shock followed by acceptance followed by praise.
This is just more of the same.
Off to buy a lottery ticket for Friday. smile

Anyone else old enough to remember when the original X5 was the worst thing to wear the BMW badge?

Saw an iX on the road today. Absolutely goping and the size of a small house. Horrific.

TX.
I saw one the other day and I did have to ask myself if the person who purchased it was seeing the same abomination that I was, truly awful to look at! I try to see the good in everything however this is something I just can’t. . I do get the whole choices thing though before anyone jumps on me for daring to speak my mind.

Some BMW design grows on you. The current z4 is a great example for me.

But I'm sorry, 4 years on and this is just as pig ugly. Second only to the BMW XM for worst looking new car on the road.

I've had an iX for over 12 months - it's an awesome car : Mega spacious, fast, quiet, comfortable and loaded with useful tech.
This update brings some useful upgrades - more range, quicker and new wheel options - nice ! smile

Clearly it's not for the PS audience, who seems to crave a lightweight track day car for daily use rotate
I have to ask, did you buy the car in spite of its looks, or because of its looks (or perhaps you don't care about looks)?

It does appear to be a fairly good vehicle for the job it's designed for. Lots of equipment, plush interior, comfortable, fast, spacious, long range, fast charging, all the things you want in an electric SUV. I can totally understand someone trying one and deciding it is the car for them. But the thing I don't get is that BMW could make it with all those attributes without also making it horrifically, horrendously, offensively ugly.
I like the iX design, but sure I get it, it's not everyone

I had a poke around a pre facelift one of these and the quality is poor. For what is a big expensive SUV the lower plastic trim and door pocket liners felt cheap.
Same experience. The interior looks good in pics but while the trim quality would be OK in a £35k 3 series it was well off the pace for a £100k+ car. You could argue these are small details but isn't half the point of an expensive luxury car the attention to detail that can't be wasted on something that has to sell by the dozen for £35k a pop.

It’s amazing how they’ve made a car to be both ugly and bland at the same time.

From the side it's just a generic two box hatch/SUV silhouette with some loud "look at me" surfacing and detailing.

I think it's the front and rear views that people find so remarkable.

I can see why they do it, that two box shape is absolutely identical across what must be 100+ models from different manufacturers, you have to resort to graphics and detailing to stand out at all so everyone is effectively just shouting louder and louder with this OTT stuff.

As an aside I should be going for a drive in an iX M50 in an hour or two!

They've lost their minds at BMW.

The moment that the BIK and the Company Leasing through salary sacrifice is removed NOBODY is going to buy these things. And that will happen. When you look at China and see some of the amazing, advanced, stylish and half the price new models from brands such as Xpang which have yet to land here I think the long term future of several German auto makers is gravely in doubt.

VW has billions in pension liabilities and debt. Their German workers are twice as expensive as Chinese ones working in factories running way under capacity with every other worker off on the sick. They are already so far behind the curve on product that I just don't see how they can justify the investment needed to catch up with the Chinese.

The business model of selling £100,000 inefficient electric cars which are ugly rests solely on tax perks which will surely not be justified in the medium term. I earn around £160k and I have no idea why I get a 45% tax break on having a luxury EV when my marginal income tax rate is 60% plus National Insurance.

These behemoth German cars are going to be white elephants long before they are knackered through natural wear and tear. 2.5 miles per kWh is shockingly poor use of energy when even a now fairly old tech Tesla is cracking 4.0 miles in the real world in the UK. And that's before we end up copying the French and impose VED based on the weight of the vehicle. The pain coming down the line for BMW et al if going to be acute with the profitable part of their model range based on hugely heavy large SUV's.

Especially when they have adopted styling and design which is largely unappealing to European tastes and unlike - say Rangerover - lacks a classy sophisticated look/image. BMWs design language has just gone vulgar, new money and fussy. I don't think it will age well. Bring back Chris Bangle!
Excellent comment, thank you. Lots of food for thought.

I have about 35k miles on an M60 now and think it's brilliant. £30k discount on RRP.

Definitely acquired in spite of, not because of looks. Don't really care tbh, the more people it offends the better.

The interior is very high grade - every online reviews raves about the quality. Yes, where your feet rest is just standard plastic If you're looking for lambs wool then you need to find another £300k !

Also, the iX starts from £70k not £100k. As with all cars - the general interior doesn't change as you move up the range. The car just gets more power, and a higher tech spec. e.g. A £130k M5 interior is the same as a £50k 520d interior, save for some light M stitching on the belts and wheel.

The iX interior : Glass crystal controls, stitched dash & seats, bronze metal trim, carbon fibre door sills and surrounds- it's very nice smile

The rest of the package is soooooo good it might just get a pass on the (absolutely terrible) looks.

The fact that we love our i3s to death, and yet are only just now also considering an iX is testament to just how ugly the iX is. We are the absolute ideal target customer for the iX as a family car, and yet it's taken years, literally years, of seeing them around for the looks to become normalised enough for me to even put it on the shortlist. Of course, as soon as I started researching it, it shot straight to the top of the pile, and now I think I really want one.
This is quite good timing for me as I’ve just been to see one this morning.

I struggle to see how anyone could ‘want’ one in the traditional sense of lusting after it, although I know there will be some that do. But it’s pretty smart and comfortable inside and I’m sure it will drive nicely (I didn’t bother to drive it) and it would make a nice family car. It’s most certainly not special, though. Not even in the Range Rover sense.

But the numbers just don’t make sense; 18 month old cars are selling for £40k now and with a £70k list price the losses are almost Taycan levels. At £30k they’d be a very tempting buy.

Real world use of my iX through Spring to Autumn last year : All trips are 3.3 to 3.8 miles per kWh.

Yes, there are more efficient EV's - same as there as ICE cars which average 10 MPG up to 70 MPG.
For reference - 3.8 miles per kWh equates to 128 MPGe, so it's massively more energy efficient than even the best ICE car smile
i have to ask a question , how did you look at that and think , you know i'd love one of those. I mean seriousley ... how ????

Therein lies the rub. There was a time you got laughed out of the showroom for having the temerity to ask for a discount on a new BMW.

A race to the bottom like that is really not good for business. It's why I'm completely holding off buying an EV until I can be confident in its residuals.
