I've seen Muntjac and other small deers in the middle of Reading over the years.
I hit a muntjac in a new car on a B road at 50mph and didn't see it coming or have time to brake, made quite a mess and caused extensive damage to the car, after having it repaired a month later the same thing happened on the A1M, 2 muntjacs this time ran from the hard shoulder into the middle lane and was unable to avoid them as the other lanes were busy. Similar thing happened on my motorbike at 40mph but a dog this time about the size of a muntjac and that did throw me off the bike and up the road. If it happens stop and report the accident to the police as the remnants will need clearing up and may be a hazard to other road users.Chucky-egg said:
Deer are absolutely everywhere now. I m a train driver (South/East/West Yorks, Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire) and see loads of them every day - there are more Deer in the UK now that at any point in the last 1,000 years. Accidents involving them are going to become more and more common.

A guy I did my cbt with hit a deer shortly after passing. Did quite a lot of physical damage.
I have always had wildlife in mind and it’s affected the times I ride at.
That said I had a near miss with a deer in spring this year at about 1030am. I’ve not seen a deer on that road before or since and I’ve been driving it for years at all times.

During the period of Covid, deer numbers rose exponentially due to stalkers being unable to stalk. Currently it is rutting season for a number of breeds, ie fallow, reds and sika. So there is more movement than usual.
There is a great deal of culling undertaken but the numbers of stalkers are reducing with less younger persons entering the "sport". So expect deer numbers to potentially increase.
Scotland has changed it's culling periods to increase the cull numbers, some stalkers are against this due to the need to gut young deer in the womb, which frankly is not enjoyable. In addition, there have been many complaints of dead deer littering the countryside.
There other problems which include a lack of desire for the meat and payments by game dealers are as low as £2/kg which is crazy given the cost of ammo, time, transport and cold chain [electric, yep it's that man Milliband again!]. One of the larger hurdles has been the issuing of firearms licences, this is now very difficult for new starters and the challenges undertaken by the police [some warranted others not; there is no consistency across the UK].
Having hit a deer in the car, I take it very cautiously around dusk and dawn. Hitting a pheasant hurts, deer are immoveable. The only way around this is to be careful.
Someone mentioned the stalkers prefer the summer?! You can't shoot deer most the summer, unless it's Muntjac. Stalkers go out in all weather, believe me. Also the remark about deer being friendly? No 99.9% are wild.

Now you mention the issues in mainland Europe, I distinctly remember a story about (I think) Germany where the local government (?) had to bring in a load of American hunters to cull either Deer or Hogs of some sort. There was a pretty hilarous picture of them all lined up in a firing line on a bridge or something with a few Police behind just letting rip.

So that's what happened to yosemite sam, moved on from rabbits to deer and took a euro trip.
