Pacific - The Official Thread
Discussion
I watched it last night and although the landing scene was very good it was nearly identical to Saving Private Ryan - just without the utter chaos when the transporter ramp comes down
It's very good but something about it didn't feel as gritty as BoB.
Early days though and it may well exceed BoB in time.
Nice to watch it in 720p with dolby digital too - great picture. The 'mericans know how to transmit a decent HD stream.

Why should it remind you of Vietnan - apart from the fact that the enemy was Asiatic.
To me the only jungle based war films that have stood out, have been based on the vientnam war.Edited by Eric Mc on Tuesday 16th March 16:59
WW2 for me in film has always been based in Europe.. I am pretty sure the amount of WW2 jungle warfare based films is pretty low..

Sounds good Ernest. Don't spoil it for us though - we don't get the first one until Easter!

Right you are. I just wanted everyone to be aware. Set your DVR's (or buy one - it's worth it)

Most UK TV viewers will have to wait until the programme gets transferred to either Sky 1 or 2 or one of the terrestrial TV channels.
If you are going to make a huge project like this to feature film production standards with Spielburg and Hanks producing it and Hans Zimmer writing the score that is going to cost - £100m I believe.
Spending that amount of money simply does not work with a 'free to air' channel solely backing it. With that amount of money spent I would be surprised if the UK rights for first showing was anything less than £2m-£3m per episode. You simply couldn't cover that with adverts on say ITV - you would be lucky to cover 20%.
On the other hand, Sky have chosen to use the opportunity as a 'marquee' series, and it has come at the perfect time in their strategy to invest in it in a big way. They are adding value for premium customers, but the real key which is obvious in the clear 'Only on Movies HD' marketing is that they are covering the cost by promoting Pacific as the 'killer application' to sell the system - Sky Movies at £8 a month, and more importantly move people onto the long term market share of HD.
As a marketing tool I have to say it is a pretty killer move, and Sky will of course be quids in. Of course the second and third round of rights will be showings on say Sky 1 with adverts say 6 months later and then maybe BBC a year later, followed by a dog channel like Bravo to play it over and over again for the next ten years like Band of Brothers...

Band of Brothers was a co-production with HBO and BBC. I'm sure the BBC were keen to take part because of the large British element to Band of Brothers. Pacific would be less attractive on that score.
I wonder what proportion of US TV viewers sign up to the "pay" channels compared to UK pay channels. I would guess that it is higher given that most free to air TV in the US is pretty dire and riddled with adverts.

All i can say is, Wow.
My Sundays are going to be occupied for the next ten weeks or so.
This is going to be at least as good as BoB. They do some "homefront" stuff with this one where they didn't do it with BoB because Ambrose' book didn't have that as source material.
The actors are good.
The landing scene on Guadalcanal is just epic.
It's "don't miss" television (finally)

Wow pretty much sums it up. Its quite a subtle wow as well. Beautifully filmed (maybe epic?), incredibly well told. Very good acting. Its not over the top at all. I'd possibly say its actually perfect. Just like giving the facts.

Indeed, "Rome' was the same with a joint deal with HBO and the BBC.I wonder what proportion of US TV viewers sign up to the "pay" channels compared to UK pay channels. I would guess that it is higher given that most free to air TV in the US is pretty dire and riddled with adverts.
I think for a series like this, no one company puts up the full money and they pool internal resources. For example with Rome is was HBO cash and effects and BBC actors and costume drama experience.
For BoB it was BBC actors and location(s) - (although no-one noticed that all of the 'towns' in BoB was the same set with different facades!), and HBO cash.
I believe Pacific is HBO cash and Channel Seven local knowhow in Oz.
I do believe that HBO have 40 million subscribers in the US. It is just more of a 'done' thing and understood that the premier shows with the top production values cannot be made and covered by just advertising revenue.
