Is it just me that doesn't understand 'Rat Look'?
Discussion
forced rat makes me what to kill myself.
genuine ratty bus' and beetles are cool at fook however.
My Mk1 golf was a wee bit ratty when i collected it, BUT it was going in for a full resto so its lost its rattyness now. i was tempted just to slam it and drive it as it was for a while but i wanted to crack on

Seen this Rat at Time Attack earlier this year at Brands Hatch, it was the only one there lol

Is it legal to completely obscure your rear windscreen in a car? I know vans are different cos they come like that from the factory but how would one pass an MOT if you riveted satin black steel sheeting to the rear window?

Not normally a fan but love this E28

Fantastic picture, almost makes me want to take a sander to my own bonnet. Almost mind, I'm not that daft.

The Ratlook is the antidote to all those shiny white goods on wheels blandmobiles that clutter the roads. Not my cuppa cha, but if the owners like it, good for them.

I like this. I like this a lot. (and surely there's profit in it if the plate is worth £1k if he says, if the body is as mint as he says, and if the wheels and tyres are as good as he says?)omgus said:

That's quality, you could hang in it with a cattle prod and electrocute pedestrians.

My rat-work in progress. I've posted pics of it before, but it evolves year by year. Crane was relatively recent. New rear end was the last addition, and just contemplating what to do this winter. Fulton visor is definite.

No apologies to the haters out there. I like it, and couldn't give a flying whether you 'get it' or not. It's used most days (in the summer, anyway...) and is as good mechanically as many vehicles out there, albeit a bit agricultural. And there is no 'false' rust at all. (Nearly) all genuine 70-year old metal.

That is a beast. Awesome work there!

Only old American and VW's pull it off!
I have to say, i think you are wrong here, imho of course, i think any make of car could pull it off if it's done properly. An old weather beaten and generally scruffy car thats say, british , could work very well. The trouble is, the modern take on the so called rat look misses the target by sodding miles. It isnt rat look, its let see how much junk i can pile on my car, oooh lets add a rusty bonnet and call it rat look.I personanlly would love to see something like a moggie minor that has been left outside for a few years to get some patina, put on the road with appropriate wheels and tyres etc, would look ace i think

Now I think this is fine, much like my opinion of the VW camper.... It looks more weathered, as if the process has occurred naturally.

It's the cars that look too contrived that I don't understand - like the Micra in the original post, where it's had so much tat thrown at it, it looks stupid
My view of the rat look is any forced rat is a load of s
te, be it a Yank, Jap or Euro car. Anyone who deliberately starts making the paintwork/bodywork look old/damaged/worn is a clearly nuts and those who spray/strip perfectly good paint are totally missing the point. What particularly irritates me is seeing eg the Rover or the Micra in this thread where they appear to be mearly jumping on the bandwagon and presumably think that they are being radically different.
Proper rats to me are pre 80s cars that have had no bodywork restoration and have acquired battle scars from daily driving or from being laid up for a long time but beyond the dents, rust patches & dull chrome these cars have immaculate engines and running gear.
This is simply awesome, isn't this one of the rat rods featured in the Audi R8 spider advert!!?

Exactly, the MK5 Golf and the Corsa, both of which look immaculate elsewhere, then have a rusted bonnet just look ridiculous. Something that has naturally faded and rusted panels after years of weathering looks effortlessly cool, as someone else mentioned it's more of a Patina look. It's the cars that look too contrived that I don't understand - like the Micra in the original post, where it's had so much tat thrown at it, it looks stupid
