Used to sneak a pint in the Grays Inn on my way home when I worked up that way, the Gordon Hotel is nearest now but always looks closed.

SWMBO used to lunch in the 3 lums occassionaly when she worked at Woodend hospital for a wee while - not great apparently...

I've had a drink in many of the places listed already in this thread, including all of those along Gt Northern Road, Broadsword and even the Towers (which has now been converted to flats).

No-one's mentioned the Butchers Arms which is just down the road a bit from the 524.

There's also the White Cockade just along from Aitkens Bakery in Torry, though I've never been in there.

Quite right ... I reckon they drink Pimms in there ... with their pinkies raised ... and mince about complaining if they don't get a maraschino cherry ...

The balaclava bar is one ive never quite been brave enough to enter, used to stay on george St so walked by it quite a few times, it has some interesting opening hours (hardly ever open on a sat night etc)
My mate went in there for a jar one afternoon after a part time job interview. He sat at the bar in a shirt/tie with a folder in front of him wondering why the whole bar were glaring at him. After twenty minutes, the barman sidled down the bar and asked him 'are you from the tax?' Once he'd cleared up that it wasn't a surprise inspection, he was left alone to his pint. I guess the clientele weren't used to folks in shirts and ties smile

The last time I was in the Balaclava was many many years ago. CT and I had been "Christmas Shopping" after having had a few in The Old King's Highway and subsequently The Frigate.

The only reason we went in to The Balaclava was 'cos we were both in need of a slash. It makes no sense whatsoever to go into an establishment 'cos you need a slash and have a pint while you're in there ... but it seemed perfectly logical at the time. nuts

As I recall, I woke up the following morning and the Christmas presents I'd purchased were nowhere to be found and I had to go out and buy them all again. wobble

Them were the days.

Not often I need dragging INTO a pub... cheers Kiltie.

Interesting Bars in Aberdonia... I think most have been covered,
those still open at least.

But you could do a Sudden death/Murder Pub Crawl. I'll start off in the
The "Covies" in Kincorth for a game of killer pool, down to the "Holburn Bar" where not long after it 1st opened a guy was "assisted" to leave via an upper floor windae..
OK not licensed bar but the "Milkmaid" milk bar on union St, saw a fatal stabbing, while at the back on Justice Mill at "Charlie's"a Bouncer made sure that a guy stayed out.. for ever.
Down Ship Row the "Lunar 7" saw an axing. and the "Belmont" had a stabbing, the "Royal Oak"(later named "Freelands" now "Blackfriars") was also the scene of a fatal stabbing IIRC initiating the change of name.
Not forgetting the "POW" where Alex the head Barman for many years passed away in the cellar after closing up and was not discovered until Peter the owner came down the next day to find out why the bar wasn't open.
I am sure there are others, The "Tanfield" out Gt Northern Road springs to mind as does the "Embassy" (function Suite) above the "Foutain Bar" but they might be the same event. And you can't tell me there has not been a "Suspicious death in the salubrious hostelries south of the river down Torry way.

On that theme, two more spring to mind ...

... the very unfortunate (and I mean that) incident in "Filthy McNasty's" - tragic for those connected and, as I understand it, quite devastating for the individual apparently directly involved ...

... and the bloke who set fire to himself in the doorway of "The Star and Garter" which I only heard about a few days ago (we were living in Norway at the time) ...

Wait a minute though ... this was supposed to be a happy thread! mad

Now, I'm afraid you may have me at a disadvantage here as I rarely venture in to that dark and dangerous foreign country that is Seagull Island.

I have, however, heard tales of "The Double Two" and "The Rat's Cellar" ... had I been to one or both of these establishments, it could only ever have been deep under cover and heavily disguised as a minker.

Ah, I see it's "The Moorings". I'm quite embarassed I didn't twig that.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about going there soon ... best jukebox in town IMHO.

The moorings is quite good, always had a laugh in there.

I work at 'The justice Mill' which is a very hit or miss place, some good customers which are a laugh, and some scummy folk. But not a bad place at all. Cheap ales too for you real beer drinkers hehe

Eta: used to frequent the Mither Tap whilst at college, day= fine but evening and weekends were certainly 'interesting'

I have been known to visit one or 3 of the Torry Riveira tavernia. The "Rat Seller" "What do you mean, its not spelled like that?" You obviously never had the pies
was a fine place for a Black & Tan. Barman would leave about 5 mil, at the top of your glass for the bottle of stout.drink

Back in the 70's I used work in the former "Pittodrie Grinite Turnings" Building where Halfords is now. and used the Double 2"[/b]
. The Country & Western Mob had regular events with guys in full western gear c/w blank firing Colt 45's shoothaving fast draw competitions and shoot outs in the car Park. (s'pose nowt much has changed really, they just don't bother to dress up or use blanks)

As for other "schemie" Bars. I give you The "Lord Byron"
, and the "Golden Cairns"that took pride in being known as the "Grubby Pub" for its food... then it was just Grubby.

I used to drive (quickly) past the Lord Byron on my way home (Mastrick/Logie shortcut)...... Looks a classy establishment!

I can see the formation of a PH "Colourful Pubs of Ye-Olde Aberdeen Town" pub crawl in the new year...... We must all go disguised as "minks"..... wink

As I recall it was a large dram rather than a pint we had in the Balaclava, but I am sure you are right it was the need to get rid of beer that prompted us going there.

I think the only thing you bought that got home was the torch on a band worn round your head, and that because you were wearing it biggrin

Been to the Mither Tap a few times whilst at college. Yeah, it's still quite... dodgy during the day. The barman wasn't that nice to us!

Iain,

Sadly, The Copper Beech is no more. Funnily enough, I asked my mother-in-law about it at Christmas and she reckoned it's been bulldozed.

Given your profession, I wondered if you might be familiar with "The Double Two" given that it's just over the wall from a training establishment associated with a certain proprietary planning package. wink

Cheers,

Eric smile

The Caledon. opposite the Art School. was ok during the day but night time could see it do a "from Dusk till Dawn" transformation
