Fastest Qualy in 2018 was 1m 16.1, so pretty fast already if they're supposedly 1.5s slower than last year ?
Exactly. And they won't open the taps until the end of testing either. I understand the aero 'loses' 1.5-2 seconds but also, the cars become faster in general too. Actually I think the cars have retained more pace than they thought they would when they changed the aero rules..Fastest Qualy in 2018 was 1m 16.1, so pretty fast already if they're supposedly 1.5s slower than last year ?
I can certainly see 1:16s coming towards the end of week and then 2 more weeks of tweaking ahead of Melbourne. And of course, the warmer temps when they return to Barcelona.
They say you can't tell anything from testing but it's pretty clear we have a very fast grid this year.

The cost of that must have been staggering. From a tooling perspective, it's two completely different cars they've just made and rolled out in the space of 2 weeks (I know they will have been working longer in the background, but visibly).
Insanity.
Or perhaps 3D printed quite quickly?Insanity.

3d printing carbon fibre?
Come on RDJohn, you know better than that!
I can't see why you shouldn't 3D print the moulds for hand-laying CF though, which would dramatically reduce the cost and time of setting things up. Come on RDJohn, you know better than that!
I also suppose there's no reason they shouldn't prototype aero parts in something heavier that CF for testing. That would allow them to do their flow measurements at least.

Big impact for Vettel today.. (who is ok), Mechanical failure on the Ferrari.

Probably best to have 2nd test chat in the 2nd test thread. https://streamable.com/193rq

A little enlightenment https://amfg.ai/2018/11/21/3d-printing-formula-one...Come on RDJohn, you know better than that!
The parts they changed were the floor, sidepods etc.
Photos show a visible weave. The floor itself must surely have a specific layup because it has to be so strong, stiff and impact resistant..
That article extolls the advances 3d printing offers for models, prototyping / fit testing, and 3d printing metal parts. No way they made those new parts on a printer!
