If I had to guess, it would the need to mention that the 'unheard of saxophonist' is black? I'm not sure? but it didn't sit well with me when I read it, or that's its typical of the BBC to mention only 'unheard of' black folk that have died?
Lets try this:
"plenty about some unheard of dead white saxophonist",
The need to mention a person is of colour is no longer needed these days, unless giving a description of a person for the purposes of identification i.e the Police have asked for it, caucasian male/female or asian etc etc
I note that it wasn't mentioned whether the saxophonist was male or female (I've not seen the BBC post yet) but just that they are black. Just no need to mention it in this case, irrespective of whether he/she is unheard of or not.
It sounds awkward to me, I could be wrong.
That's my take on it.
Yes, my post was sarcastic, the BBC in it's quest for utter diversity ignores the death of a white, female, Lets try this:

very popular singer from the 1960s, who had her own BBC TV show FFS, while it eulogises a less well known black jazzer.
I thought it was worthy of comment

"FAMOUS"
1 film and 1 TV show doesn't make you famous.

I mean as in household name to a lot of people

Stacey's mom just lost her greatest admirer...
Many people won't have heard the name Adam Schlesinger, nor heard of his band 'Fountains of Wayne'. But many of those same people will have heard his music in films and TV shows. And 52 years old too? no age at all. My wife is 52, and she's out at work right now, at the NHS "front line" caring directly for patients. To say that it's getting very real for me now is an understatement...
