The rear two plugs are a bit of a bugger to get to, aren't they?

Wow, what a response, I am humbled. Do love these cars.

Swapped my B pillar cover over, the cloth is the same, but plastic is more beige on mine. So had to drill out plastic welds and glue.

Recoloured steering wheel. Spent ages trying to get a decent match, see what it looks in daylight

Excellent work on the pillar trims and wheel - its always makes the biggest difference when you improve the item you interact with the most.

Lovely car, I trust the word 'waft' is used in excess to describe its progress.

Lovely.

How are the subwoofers enclosed? In that MDF box, or is that the amplifier in there?

Thanks for sharing. The reason I ask is that subwoofers on a shelf can operate without an enclosure in what is called infinite baffle/ free air operation. Providing they are in an enclosed area, then you will find they will drop lower and have a flatter, more natural sound due to not being in an enclosure which will essentially tune them to a certain frequency level. Might be something to experiment with.

I did some research, and came up with the enclosure, it is ported, rather than sealed. I confess, this is the first time I have even messed about with car audio, so a learning curve for me. My logic was that the factory boot carpet wouldn't create a decent enclosure?

Does the port enter the cabin through the boot? i.e the ski hatch or a whole in the rear bulkhead? Or is the port firing back in to the sealed boot?

In order to get bass in to the cabin with a ported design, then you ideally need the port, routed in to the listening area.

With an infinite baffle setup, no box is required as the subs essentially use the boot space, which is sealed from the cabin. This is a popular method of subwoofer installation in saloon cars as it is easy and does have benefits which I have mentioned previously but will explain briefly again.

The subwoofers will have a flatter/ more musical response across the bass frequency spectrum and it will sound less peaky, compared to an enclosure be it ported or sealed, which will tune the subwoofer to play at a certain frequency.

All subwoofers can be used this way, there are certain subwoofers out there that are specifically designed for this application, with increased spider stiffness, but experience shows that all subwoofers are more than happy to be used in an IB setup.

One downside is that power handling is reduced, due to less air resistance behind the subwoofer to cushion/ control the cones movement, but in all honesty, the amplifier you are using is underpowered for the subwoofers you have installed (60wrms in to speakers that can handle 350wrms), so providing you don't drive them to distortion, you shouldn't find the subwoofers over exerting themselves.

This might help...

Cheers!

The MDF box is an enclosure for the subwoofers, the amplifier is mounted inside spare wheel well off to the side

How the boot looks, nothing to see

Max, I would like to get decent shots of the R8 and Daimler together, maybe when I get the chance!
This is the best I can do in the meantime
Nice

Thanks for the technical explaination, I understand what you are saying. It is an easy enough job to unbolt the enclosure and see what difference it makes
