Anybody familiar with 'The Chronicles of Riddick' ? Good fun and some nice dialogue eg :

'You did 3 things wrong:
1. You took the job
2. You came light. A crew of 4 for me ? - f*cking insulting' etc etc

hehe

Very good film, but like Star Wars I would argue that it is not science fiction but fantasy.

2001 is Sci fi, so is Blade Runner and Gattaca. Indeed Star Trek is science fiction too.

IMO 2001 is the best Science Ficiton film ever. I have not seen Metropolis though as I believe that is generally regarded as one of the best too.

Ace - I'm intrigued, what is your definition of Sci-Fi then ?
There is 'average bod sci-fi' and 'hard sci-fi'.

Average bod sci-fi is anything set in the future and/or in space and/or involving [Dr Evil]layzrs[/Dr Evil] in which if you strip out all the 'Sci-fi' stuff you can replace with existing or historical stuff; i.e. guns or swords; in essence the sci-fi bit is just the backdrop of a conventional story. Take Star Wars for example; just a fairy tale about a boy following a quest and growing to greatness with baddies along the way and a redemption sub plot.

Hard Sci-fi is where the science/technology is a fundamental strand of the story and how people/society are affected/changed by it. Gattaca for example is where the technology of genetic profiling has been extrapolated into the future and has caused major changes in society meaning that if you are not 'perfect' you are banned from doing things. The science is a fundamental part of the story.

Back to the Future is hard sci-fi IMO so it doesn't have to be serious stuff. The Forbidden Planet is regarded as sci-fi but is it a retelling of a Shakespeare play!

This of course is all up for discussion should people disagree!

Trace smile

PS This doesn't mean I don't like the entertaining romp that is Star Wars!
Fair enough - I see where you are coming from there. I will be more careful with my terminology from here on as I dont want to be considered an average bod !

The Black Hole - great film!
I agree, IMO the best disney effort.

Star Trek The Motion Picture is a far better Sci Fi than the rest, a Gorwn up film. Ok I like the 'nuclear wessels' stick for entertainment but for Sci fi this is where its at.

Nobody yet mentioned Silent Running ?
West world is worth a mention

My number one would be

The Andromeda strain(1971)

The original knocks spots off it. Tension in the film is amazing

Outland should have had multiple mentions by now: Sean Connery in a remake of High Noon set in space - fantastic.

Ahem. See my first post.
Interested in seeing the remake when it comes out, But I said that about the The Time Machine and it was st.

They also planning a Tron remake I believe.
I wish they'd stop remaking good films. I'm not entirely sure why it bothers me so much, but it does.

i've never really seen a sci-fi film I liked despite liking many novels. Are there any intelligent, thought-provoking sci fi films?

Amen - I suggested that the other day and I got slated for it. Star Wars is fantasy, no doubt about it. Just with Lightsabres, Jedis and X-Wings instead of swords, wizards and horses.

errm Are you serious

ever heard of 2001? or indeed 2010 which I also like

not to mention my nominations of Andromeda Strain and Silent Running.

Plenty of intelligent Sci Fi films. As Ace T said and I agree there are Sci Fi films and Sci fantasy films.

It's 2001.

Anything else is a mention of good or great, and all are valid.

But, it's 2001.

The Star Wars films have an interesting side to them.

The thread running through then of an evil leader who gets to power and then creates an enemy for the people to fear.
In order to protect the people from this threat he grants himself more powers until the whole thing becomes a dictatorship

Sound familiar?

Terrorism Act
Climate Change
3600+ new laws in the last 10 years
