Midsommar - Directors Cut

errr...

Three hour information video from Swedish tourist board. Come for the sun and pretty flowers, stay for the weird pagan stuff.

Basically don't take your moany girlfriend if you're not really into her anymore but are too lazy to dump her. Probabaly won't end well for you.

Can anyone explain to me why Shawshank is so feted? Think I've seen it twice just to try to understand what the fuss was about but I remained just as ignorant! Why do people like it so much?
I think the problem with Shawshank is everyone going on about it being an amazing film sets up expectations that are tricky to meet for those who have not yet seen it. When I first saw it I knew nothing about it at all. No-one was talking about it and I think it was actually a flop in it's run in the cinema. So my experience was a film I had not even really heard of and I had no expectations of it. I ended up loving it.

I actually find if people really hype a film up to me before I have seen it I rarely end up liking it very much. The more buzz a film gets in fact the more likely when I actually see it it's going to fall flat for me. It's very rare an extremely hyped films lives up to expectations. In fact if the general buzz is that a film is nothing special I am more likely to end up enjoying it. That happened just recently with Once upon a time in Hollywood. The buzz was it was long and boring and nothing happened. So of course I really enjoyed it and in fact would rate it as the best film I have seen this year.

Dr Sleep - caught this last night after a revisit to The Shinning the other week. It seems to have gotten some bad press but I thought it was a really good movie with a great storyline and all tied in nicely for the finale. Only thing I would say is Abra was a little too brave, going head on into various situations and then not really showing much emotion to her fathers death

Saw it last week and really enjoyed it. It managed to be faithful to both the book and the Stanley Kubrick 'Shining'. Rebecca Ferguson is very nice to look at too smile

Raising Arizona (1987)
Blu-Ray

More Cohen Brothers, slapstick nonsense this time.

Reformed crim & lady wife copper, keen to start a family, "acquire" a baby from prominent local couple with an abundance of kids. Sniff of baby-return reward money draws out the hunters.

Pretty funny in places, many of the usual faces, looks great & it's still one of Nick Cage's best performances IMO.

not generally a fan of Cage, but this film is a laugh-out-loud cracker

Looking at wiki, that man has made a lot of films; only a handful of decent ones though.

Red Rock West
I rate only one Nicholas Cage film - watched it the other night.

mmm, I disagree - The Rock and Con Air are up there for me as great action films with a decent cast.

There's a few other good ones (Leaving Las Vegas, 8mm, World Trade, Lord of War, Knowing (first 2/3rds) and The Rock).

I always enjoy The Family Man as an Xmas film (might be alone there).

He was in Fast Times At Ridgemont High and Drive Angry (for the girl & the Charger).

Since he got nailed by the IRS for tax fraud he’s pretty much done every movie that crossed his Agents table to try and pay them back.
