I don't see any E39 touring on the previous pictures.

I do really like the new 5 series and the interior does look very sweet.

They don't look cheap to me - much better than the standard gas struts on most cars : https://car-images.bauersecure.com/pagefiles/69632... Also the boot is powered [open and close] so they probably provide assistance.

BMW saved those gas struts for the boot storage cover smile

I had a nose around a 530d when they launched and it felt massive to me. How does it feel on the road?

Love the wheels too, right amount of sidewall to do some proper driving on our roads. driving

It feels big on the road, it's also very quiet in the cabin and comfortable so it's perfect for cruising on the motoring.
Due to the size and weight it's not a car for an enjoyable B-Road blast [even the high powered versions].

I'm contrasting the cheap engineering of the current 5er Touring (G31?) tailgate with that of the E39. Those big old luggage-crushers do my head in, but everyone's using 'em now!

What else do you suggest they fit instead?

Err - nice compact hinges that don't take up a st-ton of space. The E39 tailgate is very nicely engineered.

As for saloons - THIS is how to get it right.

Whilst I'm sure we can all appreciate a nice hinge, I'm not sure why this has even come up? Who really cares that much about a hinge?!

In fairness though, that is a lovely hinge/strut setup.

The Phaeton boot hinge is nice but it doesn’t work with auto open/close systems.

Anyway, the Touring hinges are placed at the top of the roof and it’s very rare you actually need to use that space.

You don't see them on many BMW's either.
