That 86 custom meet video is interesting. Today, every car passing by on that road would be considered a classic in some way or another, whether a "true" classic is a matter of opinion. They wouldnt just be watching some hot rod today, but they'd also be drooling at a Sierra, Escort, Fiesta or other common as muck motor of the day.

Notice no one, apart from the person filming, appears to have a camera. Today It'll be camera phones at the ready and phones on selfie sticks and possibly some dude filming the spectacle in 4k with a drone.

Not my photo, but thought it's worth sharing. New Brighton 1980s, likely mid-late 80s judging by the Hyacinth Bucket Rover seen on the left:

I think that's a Saab 900 next to the Rover.

And from the 1940s:

Can anyone identify the models from the above?. What I found surprising is the amount of cars present, at a time when hardly anyone could afford a car, that is until about the late 50s.

I like the way the roads in these pictures have so little street furniture.
Modern roads are so cluttered

Those were the days when we relied on common sense and courtesy. We're not allowed to think for ourselves now.

Couldn't agree more, in every old pic I see the streetscape looks better; dirtier occasionally but still better.

White lines and other road markings seem to increase like a virus year upon year. Its like Colas have joined forces with Banksy.

Plus of course, on a serious note, if the streets were less cluttered then signs that we really need to see would have more impact.

Also, I'm sure a lot of signs and road markings are just highways departments justifying their own jobs – being seen to do something/anything.

Thanks Tog - it all looks a bit 'hemmed in' in that street view shot!

There's a magazine for people like us!!

"The Way We Were" published by Classic Car Weekly has a series of mundane photos of street scenes, traffic, car parks, and so on, divided up by decade, with all the interesting cars picked out.

This looks great!

Love that photo. And one for the "classics dwarfed by moderns" when you see the Renault 5 city car making the executive Rover P6 look small...]

And the P6 seems everywhere in the old photos. far more then Triumph etc versions. Did they make that many? Did they last far longer then others??
