It wasn't just the Hercules that as used in the gunship role -

I can see the canards on the Tu144
As I understand it from an excellent thread about Concorde on Pprune they are vortex generators for low speed lift and rudder authority at high angles of attack for take off and landing.

I always do my backpack helicopter test flights next to overhead lines. I also wear a safety blazer and generously fitting turned up slacks just in case.
