Best smoker barges 1-5 large [Vol 21]
Discussion
Figured I'd update the thread on my L322 as I've just ticked over 1000 miles in it since picking it up a month ago.
It's accidentally become my daily as the S60 has been sat waiting for front suspension parts and is finally being sorted on Thursday.
My describe-in-a-sentence still remains "It's an immensely capable car, but you pay for the capability."
God it's lovely.
God it's bloody expensive at an average 19mpg over those 1000 miles. Best I've had on a run is 27mpg.
I replaced the dodgy driver's headlight (£80) and passenger wing mirror (£105) with used parts so they're all good now and I'm no longer worried about my headlight catching fire!
I sourced a CD changer cartridge (£21) and fitted it so I could get the most out of the Harman Kardon Logic 7 system - it's easily on par with the other best system I've had in a car, the B&O in my B9 A4. Bloody brilliant.
I bought one of the fancy pop-out cupholders (£23) but haven't been able to fit it as I'm missing a screw (which can only be bought as a pack of 20!) and am not entirely sure how to (assuming it's even possible to) retrofit it.
I'm going to drop it into a local specialist who's done some work on my cousin's dad's LRs in the past for a proper inspection at some point soon as there's some bits I could do with properly diagnosing.
The current fettling list stands at (probably in priority order):
- The hole in the driver's rear arch (had a quote for this now, looking about £500 all in to procure and weld in a repair panel, would only go as far as primer for the paint)
- An oil weep from the front diff needs investigating, this may be related to a whine at 30-50mph that increases with road speed and only on acceleration, gear selected/engine rpm makes no difference.
- Some vibration through the steering wheel when turning at low speeds needs investigating, probably a suspension bush
- A second gearbox oil service (to complete the full flush) is needed following the first one a few months before I bought the car
- The sunroof drains are blocked - this resulted in quite a lot of water getting into the headlining and some of the electronics when we had the bad storms a couple of weeks ago (I'm going to seal the sunroof and pull the fuse as a workaround for now as sorting this will be somewhat intense/expensive I expect). Unfortunately this has resulted in some of the headlining splitting from the backing so will need to be re-glued.
- A new rear undertray is needed, current one split and hangs down
- A parcel shelf is needed
- New hill descent control switch needed
- Driver's heated seat doesn't work
- The door cards all need some work - some hot glue originally applied no longer glues certain pieces of plastic to the door card
- Passenger seat needs new leather on the seat base
It's also been put to work camping, serving as a wedding car and on a large tip run - handled all with ease!
Will get it to and through the MOT in January and see where we go from there.
Lovely car. Probably a bit too rich for my pockets.

Dirty diesel Phaeton, £3795, what could possibly go wrong...

Probably a 50p engine seal that needs the engine out.

EDIT- £615 road tax too.
I colleague had one some years ago. A headlamp bulb broke, to repair needed the front to be totally stripped down. VW quoted something crazy like £1700.00 to do the work.
He part exchanged it with a broken bulb.
In my case I had to repeat the process a few days later as it turned out to be a worn cable for the cornering headlight and not the bulb itself that was causing the flickering. Looks more daunting that it actually was.

That was a happy post
I must admit there is very little that interests me post-2012 or so, and many of the cars I really want are approaching 15-20 years old or more. It is difficult knowing what to do once the LS460 goes.
Why would it go anywhere other than with you? I thought Lexuses were the automobile answer to cochroaches, effectively able to go on forever?
