Blade Runner 2049 - a remarkable sequel for a remarkable film, which is really rare. Villeneuve got it right 8.5/10

we watched Spectre last night.

hands down the worst bond since a view to a kill - terrible script, popcorn screenplay, anorexic plot and not enough screentime for Waltz.

really poor imho.

caught a doc called Dinosaur 13 which won an Emmy in 2015 - well worth a look.

Yep...I’m a huge Bond fan and Spectre was a travesty. Christoph Waltz cast as Blofeld should have been brilliant...and it was a total dud. Rumour has it that the next one is a sequel. I think they should forget about it and move on.

Suckered into The Intern last night by Mrs phazed.

A typical nicey, nicey film that I usually avoid. Such a shame that Robert De Niro has lowered himself into these very average romps.

A relaxing 6.5/10

When Christoph Waltz was announced for Spectre, I was hoping he would basically be Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds, as bad guys go, he was brilliant in that. Blofeld wasn't anywhere close though.

Wonderful Star Wars doc on Sky Atlantic now
Elstree 1976
There was one on BBC4 a few weeks ago, basically bigging up the British contribution to the film, how it got to be made in Elstree and so on. Quite interesting, even though I haven't seen the film(s) as far as I can remember.

I agree about Spectre. For some reason it felt like the whole was less than the sum of its parts. Great stunts, car chases, gadgets etc. but in the end just not a great film. In that way it reminded me of Quantum of Solace.

Caught up with a few movies over the holidays. A couple I can remember watching...

The Foreigner.

Jackie Chan revenge thriller. It was entertaining enough although it wasn't as dark or menacing as it could have been. Some good action and the plot (as flimsy as it was) flowed along at a good pace. 6.5/10

The Man from UNCLE.

Brain out, stylish action/espionage film. I'm a bit late to the party with this one. I actually enjoyed it despite a lot of negative reviews. Again, it's entertaining enough. 7/10

I really liked UNCLE - I put it in the same league as RED, Atomic Blonde, Free Fire etc in stylish action films that don't require brainpower.

Criminal

I saw this film was recommended in this thread above somewhere… so I decided to give it a go. It had a lot of American and British A-list stars, was shot in and around London, involved some almost-believable science, and even had Kevin Costner’s character talking about paying XX “quid” for a car, all of which I liked.

The story was fairly predictable but enjoyable nonetheless. Critics hated it for its lack of originality. I confess, given the number of A-listers (Costner, Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Alice Eve, Jordi Molla and Gal Gadot who must be an A-lister after Wonder Woman), I am surprised at the lack of gloss associated with the predictable storyline and the shooting location, and I’m not sure I’d have paid to watch it at the cinema, but as a New Year’s day/evening movie at home, it struck the right chord.

I enjoyed it too. My only criticism (apart from the glaring continuity errors, gaping plot holes, and anachronisms) was that it played out like an origin story for a TV series rather than as a standalone film.

The Zoo Keepers wife - Story about a family endeavouring to save Jews in Warsaw.

Emotional as one would expect.

Its no Schindlers list but is good - one of those films i would never have watched based purely on the name - sounded like a st rom-com!

Some people really did some amazingly great things during that dark period in history.

To quote Richard Adoyade laugh

They aren't GOOD films in the main. And they all have daft plot holes.
