Pencil type gauges, Digital gauges, or Dial gauges?
I'm asking because I've often wondered about how accurate my Halfords electronic pump is as I usually end up going with the reading on my old Dunlop pencil gauge as it is "machined" and gives me more confidence in it's accuracy.

The most accurate gauge is one that can be calibrated.

Seems to be fixed so I can now vote wink

Personally I use a digital one based on a review I read in one of the car mags a few years ago.

Where would one calibrate a gauge?

Go to a petrol station. Put 50p in the air machine and set it to 28psi. When it beeps to say the tyre is at 28psi, you can be 100% sure that the tyre is not at 28psi. If your gauge of choice reads 28psi, it's wrong.

BIKE magazine did a feature on this last month.

Best were the Draper 69924 dial gauge (£10) and the Halfords digital motorcycle gauge (£15).

+1 but I've voted for pencil because we use them for aircraft.

Does that mean you've found a garage air machine that isn't out of order? biggrin

yes

Same here. Digital ones that I have used give much better readings than crappy petrol garage dial ones.

Not all pencil gauges are created equal, though.

I had a freebie one that would read about 2-3 psi out from my Sealey and my old digital Halfords (which both agreed with each other).

This.

The most likely to be right is probably going to be a decent digital one.
