Shock and Awe penetrant fluid from Halfords
Discussion
Guys,
I picked a can of this off the shelf from Halfords t'other week http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...
and I must say it's been very impressive indeed.
I don't know whether it's coincidence that everything i've used this on so far has come off, but I'm now starting to suspect that it might actually be the product. Amongst other things I've used it on corroded damper top mounts, and i've just used it to remove a broken fastener that was well corroded.
Thus far I'm very impressed.
(I haven't posted this in Technical as there are three seperate forums there, but mods if you feel this topic would be better there then please do move it).

+1 I can't recommend it highly enough.
I had a seized bolt on the clutch slave cylinder on my mx-5, I tried everything known to man for 2 weeks, mole grips, sockets, pliers, heating the bolts etc etc - sprayed that stuff on for 30 secs, hit the bolt a couple of times with a lump hammer, then the bolt came undone as if it hadn't been done up properly in the first place.
I always keep a can handy now, have since used it to release seized brake pistons and various other bits and pieces.

Thanks for the tip OP. I usually use a combination of PlusGas and a butane blowtorch mixed with arcane profanities, but I'll pick up a can of this Shock stuff next time I'm up at Halfords for a bike chain. It may mean the neighbours will allow their children to play outside when I'm fixing the car.

or a once hexagonal nut becomes round, what's your answer for that einstein
I very rarely round stuff these days as I always use six sided sockets

They had to be seriously corroded for them to round off. If they do beat the next size down onto it. If that wont work;
First http://www.amazon.co.uk/Irwin-Bolt-Grip-Remover-Ex...
If that fails http://www.toolsdiy.co.uk/shop/view/hand-tools/2pc...
If that fails (and it usually doesn't) then a chisel applied correctly can shock them loose.
If all else fails they get cut off

My year and a half so far of being a 'mechanic' has taught me that its all easy, you just have to know how to fix stuff when you break it

Yes because thats alot easier than just spraying something on it

I read on a machinist site a while back where they had rusted the same bolts the same way and did a test with the major brand penetrating fluids and kroil ended up being the best off the shelf product with liquid wrench close behind. But what they found better than all of them was a 50-50 mix of acetone and ATF.
