early DB9, Vanquish, performance figures
Discussion
Afternoon all, new to the AM forum, have to admit I've been 'lurking' for many months! Will be parting with my tuned merc sl55 and purchasing a db9 or vanquish in the next few weeks (budget approx 45k)
I have scoured the internet looking for 0-60 figures for these cars and every single source seems to give a different number (esp for the vanquish). I know these 0-60s aren't everything but:
Q1. has anyone made the transfer from amg's to v12 aston's? how did they compare (mainly power-wise)?
Q2. Can anyone shed some light on official performance figures for the standard db9 and vanquish (i.e the earlier cars with no sports pack/upgrades, etc)?
Q3. Is there any benefit to be had from a simple remap of the v12 engine (e.g. is 30-40bhp achievable)?
Any help/advice is very much appreciated!

I came from a SL55 to a DB9....... I think the SL was a little quicker.......but it ain't no Aston Martin...... a 45k Vanquish will make the SL55 feel like a Ford Ka when it comes to servicing costs ......DB9 will cost you about the same
the db9 is probably the one I will go for as I need the car as a daily driver,, yep the maintenance costs are my main concern with the vanquish, also the dated interior is the other drawback along with the manual paddleshift (compared to the db9),, however I think its better looking then the db9 and has a lot more presence (+ the vanquish was always my dream car!)benzito said:

I feel the same as you and have been very tempted to buy a Vanquish but I just know it will end in tears......my DB9 in a wonderful car and I will just have to ignor that bloody Vanquish itch !

I was interested in a Vanquish S a few years back. I had a chat with a kind gentleman who told me about some of the common problems and the costs associated.
I bought a V8 Vantage instead and eventually replaced it with a V12 Vantage.
It's a big heavy car with what was - for the time - a bleeding edge technology gearbox. But it looks sublime, great road presence, sounds great. But it's dated inside.
Best of luck and happy shopping!

Unless you get the 2007 cars which had a DB9-based centre console, or a 2006 car with the Works Service manual conversion which includes another (but different) DB9-based centre console. I'm looking at getting a 2006 car with the W.S. conversion of the console only - I rather like it ... pity the DB9 dials were an upgrade option too!

Post that to the Bamford Rose sticky - Mike will be able to help. The very short answer is "yes".
thanks John, I have emailed the above, I think I will probably remap the car as soon as a buy it, then the acceleration differences compared to the sl55 will be negligible - it just gets more harder to go 'backwards in performance' once you've owned fast cars! Before the remap can anyone guess what is the first thing I will change in the new car???
yep remove the infamous "fuse 22" if not already done!

I must say, about two/three weeks ago I started with a mild Vanquish itch which can now only become cured with a purchase of said car. Coming over to the UK next week to begin the search. Not quite sure where to start but think it will be a Vanquish S.
I wish I could afford the Vanquish S, its looks like a fabulous car, I worry if I buy a db9 that the 'Vanquish itch' will remain, its also a very exclusive car (I live up in Manchester and I have rarely seen a vanquish, many v8v's and db9's however). I've always wondered why the Vanquish cost 170k brand new compared to the db9's approx 110k. Is it e.g because of the exclusivity, or that more parts were hand/custom built? A 2003 Vanquish for 45k seems like an awful lot of car for the money, guess I would probably have a different view once repair bills ensue! I also personally don't see them depreciating much over the next 1-2 years if at all

According to the howmanyleft website, there are maybe 3000 DB9's reg'd in the UK and only 340 Vanquish , and 236 Vanquish S. The low numbers of the Vanquish should mean you're right in terms of depreciation. I've seen a few posts suggesting they may even rise in value.A 2003 Vanquish for 45k seems like an awful lot of car for the money, guess I would probably have a different view once repair bills ensue! They're all great cars though, so whether it's a V8, DB9 or Vanquish, I'm sure you'll enjoy it

A1. I have both an SL55 and a DB9. The power delivery is very different, the SL55 (as you know) is like a sledgehammer whereas the DB9 is smoother and less perceptible. In Sport mode and using the flappy paddles the DB9 is so close as to make no difference and of course has no limiter so leaves the SL55 for dead. The DB9 handles better than the SL and is a far more rigid ride (no ABC suspension of course). The noise the DB9 makes is more satisfying as well especially on startup the SL has to get going before the roaring starts. The SL COMAND is far better than the AM console which has too many buttons and is a little clumsy to use. The SAT NAV in the AM is fine by me although some do not rate it - I would classify it as adequate.I have scoured the internet looking for 0-60 figures for these cars and every single source seems to give a different number (esp for the vanquish). A2. The DB9 is 450BHP and 0-60 in 4.5 seconds not sure of the Vanquish
A3. Direct your question to Rick at DMS. For me I have no need for extra power as both cars are more than enough for the roads around here.
The AM Extended Warranty is a little hit and miss and not as comprehensive as the Tier 1 on the SL55. So if you get an issue you may end up arguing the toss over things which takes some of the shine off ownership. So far in my ownership of 8 months I have had a rear light go, the cd changer not playing and a split washer bottle
rear light - £550 (got it done for free though as I had only had the car a few months)
CD Changer - £600
Washer Bottle £230 ish (Ridiculous price)
Saying all this it is still a great experience to drive but I keep the SL as top down driving is hard to beat although of course a Volante could give you both.

I think the 0-60 times for the Vanquish vary greatly and there was a lot of chat around the press about being unable to reach the (if i remember correctly) quoted time of 4.7secs.
They are superb fun, and a very different beast to the DB9. The reason they cost so much more when new though was largely due to the amount of man hours to build which I think was much, much higher (double?)
Main costs revolve around the fact that AM suggest 6monthly service intervals vs annually for DB9.
Other than that you need to make sure that if you keep the automated manual box you make sure it's had the sensor upgrades. Early gearboxes were ropey, I had an early 2006 S and now have one of the last cars built - the difference in gearchange and reliability is remarkable.

If he's the person I think he is then he's not lucky, he's one of those clever hardworking types who bailed from one very successful hedge fund and set up shop in a very hot area.

And no, I don't know him, never met him, but I know people who know people etc.

That is the 470. The 450 is 4.7 seconds.regardless it seems both db9 and vanquish will be plenty fast enough!

what are others seeing in terms of average mpg in the db9 and vanquish, I'm not that fussed tbh but I could well be one of the very few who come across to AM and see better fuel economy!
I looked at my dash earlier and my average mpg for the last 7k miles in the sl55 is 13.6mpg and this is low for 3 reasons, 1. amg's have awful economy anyways, 2. i have made engine modifications and thus average mpg dropped by approx 2-3mpg, and 3. i drive like a prat most of the time
i reckon i could average 19mpg in a db9 which doesn't sound like much but it would reduce my fuel bill by 40%
