Real world mpg - X5 40d?
Discussion
I have an X6 35d and with very gentle running on a long journey it will just mange 30mpg. (This compares to my last 530d E60 which on a like for like driving style would manage 40mpg) More usual cruising without going mad is 28mpg (34mpg in the E60).
London commuting is down to 20mpg.

I've done just over 10k miles from new in an X5 40d M-sport. Average mpg is 28.5. Trip computer readout and actual measured mpg is almost identical. mpg doesn't seem to change much no matter how hard or gentle I drive it..! Its a 5 seater car on 20" wheels, and run at the higher pressures (2.4bar front ,2.8bar rear)

Same as mineSince my own post earlier in the thread I swapped the X3 35d for an X5 40d, it averages 29-ish on a mixture of the wife doing her daily running around and longer-distance family trips. I've seen 33-34mpg from it on relaxed cruises - best was about 36mpg driving around the Scottish Highlands on open NSL A-roads. If pushing on i.e. fast long-distance motorway cruising it's going to hover around the 30mpg mark.
Great car...

It would certainly be interesting to know how it compares to the 50i
Although not an exact comparison we have the 35d engine in an X3 (the older 286bhp unit with 6-speed box) and it averages approx 30mpg, on a steady run 36mpg is possible.
We currently have a 40d, having had a 50i before (it was stolen).Although not an exact comparison we have the 35d engine in an X3 (the older 286bhp unit with 6-speed box) and it averages approx 30mpg, on a steady run 36mpg is possible.
The 40d gives almost double the range of the 50i. Real world mpg for the 40d is high 20s to low 30s. The 50i was in the mid teens.
The 50i was great fun for a big 4x4 and amusingly quick, but the 40d is pretty quick for its size. The thing I really miss from the 50i is the active suspension.
I have a 30d 8spd. Average around 31. On a long run (down to the alps) 5 up, fully loaded we get 32 .. so 600miles range! Best I've seen is 36 .. which was 2 up on a run.
Concur that they're fabulous vehicles and lovely to drive .. touch wood, nothing wrong in 2+years.
I deleted the sports suspension. On 20" RFT wheels the ride is firm, but not harsh. On 19" winters (non-RFT) it's positively supple.

Same car and same mpg here. Worst was 27 which was mainly driving around town, best 35.OK, the official 38mpg combined figure is dreamland but it's still very good. As is the performance. And the gearbox. And the interior space. And the driving position. And the seats. And the refinement.
reality here:

average 27.79mpg over 3 cars. sounds about right to me.

I just swapped my '08 30D for an '11 40D M Sport with stock 19" wheels. The 30D gave about 31mpg over the first 10k miles I had it. Then had it remapped and got 33-35mpg for the next 30k miles - very little town driving, mostly a combination of twisty highland roads, some dirt tracks and motorway/long distance work. Worst I ever had was 28.4mpg on a 3000mile jaunt to Italy via Switzerland, 4-up and cruising at 95-120mph on the autoroutes. The 40D so far is giving me 31-33mpg on the same type of driving - once I'm used to it, I'll probably have it remapped too. Lovely car - much more refined and better riding than the 30D and you can really feel the RWD bias in spirited driving.

Old mans averaging 33mpg so he tells me.
But he drives It like an oldie too!
Amazing turn of pace for such a big car.

Sounds about right - I tend to drive in the IAM/RoSPA style, just dialled up to 11… But he drives It like an oldie too!

And apparently the 40d responds really well to a remap, the only downside being that you have to pull the ECU to remap it - I'm guessing no-one's cracked the encryption via OBD yet. Last time I spoke with our friendly local remapper, he'd done some 40Ds on behalf of a main BMW dealer - 360bhp seems easily achievable, along with better economy.
My old (2012) 40d was mapped to 360bhp by DMS and averaged 31mpg over 15,000 miles.
My current (2013) has done 5000 miles unmapped and average shows 27mpg.
I just need to get it remapped at some point.
Biggest issue is lack of call backs from DMS, I was hoping for a vehicle swap price (as superchips do) but vehicle went before they called back. Must try again at some point as once they are on side they are brill.
