Hi,
I've just been presented with a quote for £4250 for replacing gearbox and clutch on my 05 Monaro VXR 6.0 (93K miles). The quote came from a garage I have used for over 15 years to service various cars and they have always provided good value and service. They have looked after my Monaro for the past two years with no issues. Indeed, they have proven their superior expertise over Drive Aldershot on a number of occasions.

They have inspected the gearbox after I reported gear selection problems and also as a result of finding small pieces of metal in the gearbox oil during a change. Here's what they said :-

"The gearbox has been with our specialist for nearly 2 weeks where they have had huge problems locating components, (apparently there a 2 types on box, one is relatively simple the other is problematic - you can guess which you have!!). We have also been talking to dealers & specialist without any luck.

Yesterday I was offered a new gearbox at £8k!!!!!

Anyway, having inspected all parts, including clutch & flywheel etc, we are now in a position to give you our recommendation/quote.

We have been able to source a new gearbox from the US via a UK supplier. It's not cheap but is simply the only way forward. It also needs a new clutch and flywheel assembly. Again we have spent time researching the best option and have a new (high performace LS7 but with standard feel) unit at a cheaper than Vauxhall price.

The box & clutch unit are £3900 inclusive
Allow about another £350 labour/fluids etc
Totals (a massive) £4250 inclusive of VAT....

The other options are to reassemble as is. A warning if we are to reassemble, the spigot bush is totally shot and will have to be renewed but we'll also have to find a way of making good the output shaft. This is a concern but not unsurmountable."

My questions are :-

1) Is a life of 93K miles for the gearbox 'normal'. Note I have had the car from 6 months old/6k miles until now and although i enjoy the performance, i'm very mechanically sympathetic.
2) Does the price look reasonable? (considering the magnitude of the problem)
3) Do I have any other options?

I appreciate any constructive comments!
Cheers,
Steve

Should get a new clutch and new box fitted for around 3.5k, but can get it rebuild for less

You can buy parts direct from the states, there are also a few tremec dealers in the UK I've been told

Those prices don't look unreasonable for a new warranted box and LS7 clutch in the UK. Most on here recommend the LS7 as an upgrade to the standard clutch. What is wrong with the existing clutch?

The gearbox type you have is a TUET2066, gm p/n 92155485 vin code M12. Make sure you don't get the vin code MM6 (p/n 92067136 TUET2100) which has taller ratios and will make your car feel slower.

I got a box which was unused surplus at a speed shop in 2007 from the USA for about £2300 landed. You might get lucky and find something on eBay USA.

Try www.gmparts.direct, they currently have the box at $2,760.27, approx £1800, obviously shipping and duty are extra.

It would seem to me as a premature failure,as you would expect a gearbox to last longer under normal use. It may be worth contacting raving to see if he has a secondhand gearbox.

i'd stay away from a second hand box. you might save a few quid now, but it could go bang very quickly.

get your box rebuilt. it will be better than brand new if its done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Sorry to hear of your issues!!!
I've dropped a pm with a possible answer to your issues and in the uk
Rebuilt gearboxes are not cheap and need to be done by somebody who knows there trade if not done right will fail again soon.
Yours has metal filings inside so how many parts will it need and needs to be thoughly checked for a rebuild although possible it must be done well!!
A very low mileage gearbox could provide the answer!!

Really, sourcing parts is easy. They may not be in the UK, but it is still easy. They havent been trying very hard.
And some metal from a box isnt unusual ( of course depends on shape/size etc ). Just exactly what parts do they say it needs ?
You didnt report any catastrophic failure, just some minor selection problems ?

There is no spigot bush in an LS engine. So either their statement has been lost in translation between there and here, or they need to look again. The LS uses a bearing, and TBH, these rarely need replacing.
And I'd be concerned about why they want to tamper with the output shaft, which has at the opposite end of the gearbox ?

You stated there was selection problems just ?

I had a similar problem with my 06 VXR (57K miles )last year just after I bought it. Actually it was found accidentally when I took it to M.F. for a noise problem which was coming from either the engine or clutch area.

When M.F. removed the gear box they found the input shaft was wobbly and someone had put in the wrong spigot bearing. When they stripped down the gear box it was found to be in bad shape even though it still was working. It was decided the fastest way and probably he best way in the end was to install a new gear box which M.F. sourced for me.

Doesn't sound to bad for a new gear box and LS7 clutch as mine was approx £3200 plus removal and installation costs and I already had a LS7 clutch installed which I believe would be approx £900 installed. As you would only need to pay for one removal and installation charge £4200 to £4300 seems about right.

I think you need to be carefull sourcing a similar gear box from a GM source here or abroad as I believe they can come with a different number of splines on the output shaft and different bell housings for different car models like Corvettes and Camaros.

Parts World Performance can supply a Tremec T56 6 speed gear box but I'm not sure if it is the right gearing or would fit a Monaro VXR.

I had a rip shifter fitted last year and it exposed some forthcoming problems with the gearbox that I hadn't noticed before
Vibrating gearstick in third gear
MF spotted it
A year later it's still going having done 15kish on it since the fault appeared
Oddly it didn't feel good for a couple of days a few weeks ago but then seemed to rectify itself which is really odd
Suspect it will just go on me one day but it also could just keep going for all I know !

you can get a TR6060 (much better than a T56) for under £2.5k brand new in the UK

Rebuild is prob the better option, Monkfish did mine after I selected reverse at 160mph and it was very reasonable (sub £2k)
