Thats dreaded age is approaching and whilst i dont use my hgv or PCV entitlements i dont want to use them so wondered how the medical thing worked

Do dvla inform me when they are due?

Will i need seperate ones for each category?

Look at the expiry dates on the back of your photocard. Even if for some reason they aren't the same, a renewed medical will apply to both (assuming the DVLA don't cock-up) giving you 5 more years of each.

You can let them run out and then renew them at your leisure. Assuming the DVLA don't cock-up, you won't 'lose' them, though personally I wouldn't leave it too long just in case. But obviously that's no good if you need to use them at short notice.

You can have a medical done for £50-odd quid. GPs charge a lot more.

The DVLA should write to you shortly about your need to renew. But if they don't you'll need to obtain a D2 form and D4 medical form yourself.

As an ex LGV instructor I know all about this

Firstly not all medicals are at age 45 so as stated before check the expiry date next to the C entitlement on the photocard licence

One D4 medical covers both LGV & PCV if you have both

You usually get a reminder about 6 weeks before a medical is due

There is no time limit at all if you let the medical expire and then want to renew it later in life - at age 80 if you want to !!

And remember - if you do renew now NEVER pay more than about £50 for the D4 medical - if you do then you can be assured that you have been ripped off

Because other places do it for £50 or less to the same standard (I got mine done for free wink), so no point paying more than that?

There are medical companies that do a full D4 medical across the UK for around £50 so paying your own GP over that price makes no sense
There is no law/rule that says a D4 medical must be done by your own GP

Some GPs charge as little as £30 for it so it is worth checking with them first

'Doctors on wheels' is one of those national companies if anyone wants to gooogle search

Because there is a max of 5 years after age 45 so I assume you had your last one at age 45?

Definatly not, it's been quite a few years since i had a medical. My licence was sent back for a change of address a couple of years ago, before my 45th birthday, and came back due for renewal 2014.

How do they verify your medical history to complete the form, and what do you know about the people they employ?

The D4 form is specific to the medical done on that day and if all is ok then your GP is not contacted by DVLA medical section - driver agrees to this on the form
The driver does have a legal duty to inform DVLA of any ongoing medical issues

Many people THINK that a full medical history must be provided but this is not the case

Just because I don't use it today doesn't mean I won't need to at short notice

As i said if DVLA haven't cocked up it will expire the day before your 45 if you held the enttlement prior then every 5 years from 45 as previous said as the renewal only last for 5 years after 45......unless DVLA cock up which isn't unusual

INFO

Not all D4 medicals are required at age 45

If the last D4 medical was done at age 42 then the next will be due at age 47 - 52 - 57 ......
