hi,

looking at engagement rings and had settled on a nice one locally but then saw one in boodles thats really nice.

now am i being swayed by a brand or is it good stuff? I find tiffanys name a bit naff these days and dont want to buy a ring for life where the brand may go nafftastic. have they a good reputation? - i hadnt heard about them before reading they seem to be popular name wise with the middletons etc these days.

The ring itself - which is what its about - is really nice and the diamond looks fab but as its at the cheaper end of their range will people ( girls.. ) know its cheaper or am i being paranoid.

I reckon the missus would love the brand at the mo but is it stupid to buy a named product over a local one? The ring seems the same quality and price as the local one but am i just paying for all their sponsorship etc? or will the other half go oooh boodles compared to local place - does it make it more or less special?

thanks!

We bought Boodles and it is really gorgeous. Like you I was put off by Tiffany's (seemed a bit Argos-y) and the design of the rings in De Beers were a little inelegant.

Boodles' designs are great, the service makes you feel really special (glass of champagne when you go in) and there's plenty of choice. Don't be afraid to ask if they don't have exactly what you want as they can source diamonds and make up a ring on a couple of weeks.

Why not get one made locally, or take her on a trip to Bath or something, and get one designed there, that will get you points for sure.

i had the champers yesterday! tbh though that sort of backfires with me as i think am i paying for the brand/image/service rather than the stone - yet it seems the same quality than the local one and yes they were great ( as one would hope parting with cash! ). i just wonder in 200 years will the antiques roadshow go oooh its engraved with boodles that was/is a good company or will it be naff/mass produced! i think too much!

As said above, get one made locally. As nice as I'm sure the one you're looking at is, if she knows that she's the only girl in the world with this ring, there's BIG husband points in there for you! And quite possibly a blowie too.

I got Mrs_T's made for just under £1000 when I was going to spend almost twice that on one that wasn't nearly as nice. It could also help you in the long run as you can go back to the same place to get the 'ding ring made too and they will (should) still have the design on file and make something in the same format that matches perfectly.

If you're anywhere near Southampton, Roux Jewellers on East Street are amazing.

Boodles are very good, I know a couple of people that have used them -much the same as yourself wanted to go to a bond street jeweler but didn't want the naffness/crassness associated with going to Tiffany. I think Boodles image will endure as much more "cool" and "bespoke" than Tiffany despite being two doors down. I very nearly bought from there myself before I stumbled across Lucie Campbell (further up bond street, much smaller shop) which had the ring I needed plus had a little bit of the bespoke "old world" charm of a smaller shop with very good service, which worked for me. I would have been equally happy with Boodles I suspect but Lucie Campbell just pipped them for me.

HTH,

R.

When looking for Mrs Oscarmacs eternity ring we visited all of the big brand names Tiffany, De Beers, Boodles & Aspreys to name a few. Took notes of those that she liked, model numbers etc. We then took pictures of the ones she liked to a local jeweller and asked him to design something original from the ideas we presented him with.

Absolutely the best thing I have ever done. Brilliant workmanship, fantastic customer service and most of all the feeling that we had something unique. Perhaps it may not hold it's value the same way that a Tiffany ring of the same price would but knowing that we would never see anyone else wearing the exact same ring is priceless!

Get a picture of one you like and get the train to Birmingham.

Jewellery Quarter is what you want. It has a website with all the individual jewellwers on too.

Boodles are well aware of their brand values and (probably) won't allow these to be compromised in the manner of chav-tastic Tiffany, but hey-ho, you never know.

If you / (she) wants a Boodles ring, buy one.

IMO Boodles have lovely designs, but these aren't anything that couldn't be replicated elsewhere for less.
