OK, am after a new watch.

So new or used, bespoke or mass produced.

I *really* like the idea of a Dornbloth & Sohn made to special order.

Over to the watch geeks smile

the reason you'd buy a 5k watch pre-owned is because you were worried about depreciation, and you wanted someone else to take the hit.

the reason you'd buy a Dornbluth is Because you wanted utterly exquisite craftsmanship, personal service, and a joyful experience every time you look at your stunning timepiece.

If you spend five g's on a stainless Rolex Sports model after reading about this experience, you have lost the game.

Or you wanted something really special that you couldn't get for 5k new ... for example a Blancpain 50 Fathoms or an AP Royal Oak.

However, I think I'd go for the Dornblueth. I've had a list of three major targets for a long while now ... the Dornblueth is the only one still to get.

Interesting thread and a nice presentation of a well made watch but it's not for me, too large. 38mm is the biggest I ever consider.

I love my Dornbluth

and although I've not checked the prices lately £5k should get you a very nicely specified 99.1 complete with the bracelet & a couple of Dirk's beautiful straps.

Of as tertius says £5k gets you into some very nice pre-owned stuff - Glashutte Original Sport Evo, Zenith Striking 10th, vintage Rolex 5513 etc. etc.

They don't often come up for sale s/h. Being made to order, most are keepers.

I reckon I'd get my money back (or close to it) on mine. Avoiding the 6 month wait + the lack of any personalised engraving would help.

part of the issue will be the S/H value i assume ?

Most guys dont want to take a huge hit. But this is in general . this particular watch custom level is high , so might be a real keeper !

So you've just given me £5K to spend?

New: Dornblueth
s/h: Zenith Chronomaster, Breguet Marine or Blancpain FF

I've a spare kidney I'd give for an A Lange and Sohne. In fact I could probably manage without one of my lungs too.

The fact that the face has been modified might lower its value? why would anyone else want those digits to be in red etc other than the original owner ?

Nice watch , , but i would want to know how much it might be worth should i need money to eat !

Glad it's not just me then.

square earth - I "think" the point you might be trying (very badly) to make unless I'm mistaken, is that any watch that is VERY bespoke might have a very narrow appeal should the original owner want to sell it on & therefore suffer badly from depreciation - am I correct?

If that was big a concern, the Dornbluth buyer could just pick the most common spec & have no personalised engraving at all, but these watches should be reasonably unique - otherwise what's the point? Nobody worried about needing money to eat should sink money into high end watches in any case - definitely not brand new ones.
