Hi,

Which of the following places are good to live? Rent Budget is upto £1000 pcm.

- Stoke Poges
- Maidenhead
- Twyford

- Bracknell (Hanworth, Naseby, Wheatley, Arncliffe, Segsbury Grove, Charterhouse Close, Nuthurst )

- Langley
- Readind

I will be living with family and kids so schools need to be good as well.

I have lived in Bracknell and Twyford. Infact just recently moved back to Twyford (for the 3rd time) and imo it is a far nicer community to live in.

Regarding Schools are we talking Primary or Secondary?

In Twyford there is the Colleton Primary School next to a housing area called Broad Hinton and thats a nice place to live.
On the outskirts is The Piggott School which is a secondary school or Waingels on the road into Woodley.

Twyford Village is a nice place to live, although with ever increasing traffic the cross roads can get busy at peak hours but it has a Waitrose Store (Tesco's Express opening up early 2012 right next door). Nice curry houses, good chippys and has a ideal train station to London, Reading or Henley.

I'm quite a fussy person and I really like Twyford (been living just outside of Twyford for over a year now)

Here's a few pointers that may interest you :
-Very good pubs and variety of restaurants.
-Generally nice area and friendly community.
-Wide range of Schools within a couple of miles.
-Not far from Reading for major shopping and nights out.
-Easy access to the M4 and M40, less than 10miles from a major Hospital (Royal Berks)
-Twyford also has a good Doctors Surgery, Waitrose, good hairdressers etc

Quite local to most PHers, local drinkups/ Curry nights..... High priority that one wink

As said above it can and does get busy on the crossroads but nothing to major.

Out of those areas I'd have to choose Twyford.

You'll really struggle to find anything suitable on that budget for a family in the only part of Reading I'd choose - Caversham.

It's hard to start getting picky about the area if you need 3 bedrooms for a grand a month. What happens is you price yourself into the worst part of the good areas and negate the advantages. I'd look at Taplow as it's not far from Slough and ok in parts. Langley worth a look for same reasons.

Out of that list Tywford is a no brainer. Bracknell is crappy - lived there for 5 years. Nasty souless place.

Reading is ok in places, as it Langley to be honest, but Twyford is so much nicer than any of the others. Well placed, some nice pubs, good links into London.

Mind you, if you're happy to live out that way, consider Wokingham too, its lovely.

ETA - Stoke Poges is really rather nice, but a bit too close to Slough for my liking. And Slough is, well, Slough.

No Brainer - TWYFORD everytime!

Used to live in Maidenhead, have now lived in Twyford for 10yrs and I love the village, lovely sense of community, great local pubs (Wagon & Horses and Duke of Wellington), one of the best curry houses in the country (Haweli) and a Waitrose, soon to open is a Poco Loco and a Tesco Express. Great Primary schools and senior schools as well a great healthcare with great doctors surgery and dental surgery and Royal Berks hospital just down the road.

Only issue is, can you get a place large enough for a family? NO - you'll pay 6-700 for a 1-2 bed flat as a rental.

Look at Woodley, Ruscombe, Wargrave and Charvil as alternatives although the last three are "Almost" Twyford anyway.

Happy Hunting!

Gerrards Cross has the same dialling code as Slough - very awkward...

Regarding price, that is the only downside but there is places that pop up.

Ive just moved into a 2 bed flat which is £850/month, but worth the premium for this area over others.

Stoke poges 100%. It is nice and close to Gerrards Cross and Beaconsfield and is a much better area than the Reading surrounding areas. Prices reflect this though. Also local to the best grammar schools in the country.

I live in Bracknell and wouldn't recommend it. New housing developments popping up all the time, but the town centre is crap, although eventually it will be re-generated.

I would vote for Twyford....but Wokingham is a great place to live. Lovely town.

If kid's education is important, partic State secondary, then look at being in the catchment area for Maiden Erleigh which has a pretty good reputation. That means the West of the Wokingham BC area.
Don't dismiss Lower Earley as there are some pleasant closes even though it's pretty big and close to the M4/A329M.
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.
