Hi Guys i wonder if you can make my Christmas and help me ?
my Electric mirrors on my 1990 S3 don't work. I bought the car 1 Year ago and this is the first free time to try and make them work. I have been doing more important jobs first on the car. i have found switches connected to the wrong cables and even not connected at all.
Looking at the back of the Electric Mirror Joystick and the Left Right switch for them i don't trust the way the cables are assembled on the spade connecters.
Please please has someone a photo of the back of the Joystick and Left Right switch. I need to know the colour of the cables and their positions. there are no numbers on the spade connecters. i have the wiring diagram but to be honest for me it's not very clear.
The cables i have are JOYSTICK : BLACK. BLACK. RED. ORANGE. GREEN. BLUE. 6 cables

LEFT/RIGHT SWITCH : WHITE. BLACK/GRAY. BLACK/GRAY. BROWN. BLACK/YELLOW. BLACK/YELLOW. 6 cables

smile many thanks blues3,
that's a good christmas surprise. Maybe there's some light at the end of the tunnel. I'll have a try on the car to fix the mirror problem once and for all. There is just a small question. On the joystick i have the same colour wires but 2 x black (6 wires drg has 5 wires). On the selection switch all the cables are the same.
It is interresting to know some cables have 1 tracer colour and others have only 1 tracer

Hello, I have some photos I made when I tried to solve the same problem, on my car the colors are not the same as on the diagrams and because of that it was realy not easy to sort out.
Just send me an email and I send you the photos.
Merry Christmas.
Christian.

I seem to think that the mirrors on my old S3C didn't have the heating connected even though the wires were there but the adjustment worked.

You can try this for comparison. Obviously it's for a wedge but the wiring may be similar

hi V8S4eme,
you look pretty handy with a camerabiggrin
do have a good shot of the back of the Joystick and another of the back of the Right/Left switch. I need to know the colour of the worms and their exact position.
I have 6 cables for the LEFT/RIGHT SWICH: Black/gray. Black/gray. White. Brown. Black/yellow. Black/yellow.
JOYSTICK: Red. Orange. Green. Blue. Black. Black.confused

Sorry, no. I looked when I saw your first post but it seems this is one of the few shots I didn't take. I left that switch alone on the basis of "if it ani't broke, don't fix it". It should (laugh) be esay enough to work out what wires go where by looking at the colour coding on the loom in the door and comparing with what is at the switch bearing in mind the terminals for the L/H door and probably on the R/H side if the switch (& top terminal will probably be down on the mirror). Good luck.

i'm still trying to solve my Electric Mirror Puzzle.
I have 6 cables for the RIGHT/LEFT Switch: Black/slate. Black/slate. White. Brown. Black/yellow. Black/yellow.
I have 6 cables for the JOYSTICK : Black. Black. Red. Orange. Green. Blue.
On the Left/Right switch there are moulded numbers: (top row)13. 11. 12. (bottom row) 26. 24. 25.
There are soo many possible permutations i need some help please please someone

Sorry if this is stating the obvious. If you look behind the door card you’ll be able to see which colours go to that mirror. You only need to take off one door card because the colours you can’t see will be in the other door.

L/r switch - You need to check the wiring diagram but brown is probably the common live, white is possible common earth. If that’s the case, the others will be the live power feeds. If you haven’t got one, a cheap multi meter will help you find the live wires. I’m guessing now because I don’t want to take my centre console off but these pairs then attach to the joystick? Or do they disappear off to the doors? Have you got any photos of the backs of the switches?

The joystick – black = probably the earths (one for up/down + one for l/r) the other four will be paired to the doors for up/down & in/out. Once you’ve had a look behind the door you’ll know which side is which.

With a bit of messing about you should be able to narrow it down to a choice between up/down & in/out and then it will be easy from there.

i hope that i'm making progress with the mirror enigma.I removed the door speakers to get access to the mirror plugs.
For the right door mirror i have Blue + Yellow to Blue for Joystick.
Green to Brown for Left/Right switch
White to Black/white tracer for Left/Right switch

For the left mirror i have Green to White x2 for Left/Right switch
Blue + Yellow to Blue x2 for ?
White to Black/yellow tracer for Left/Right switch.
I unplugged both door mirrors and tested with a spare battery and both operate in 4 directions
laugh I reconnected them and tested at the end of the cables and they both operate in one direction.
Now i know the mirrors operate and there are no cables broken between the mirrors and inside the car.
I still need to know which cable to which spade on the 2 controls.
At least i know the mirror motors functionlaugh

You know how to pair the wires up s you’re nearly there! On my wiring diagram (V8S) the following wires go to the change over switch

The brown (from the relay) is connected via the switch to the green/slate & red/blue pair from the (LH?) mirror
The white/brown (from the relay) is connected via the switch to the Light & green/red pair from the (RH?) mirror

The purple, yellow & red/green wires from the relay go to the joystick but the diagram doesn’t indicate what the terminal numbers are so this will be down to trail & error. The brown from the joystick goes to the mirrors.

So now you should only have three wires looking for a home.

Unfortunately my diagram is too small and fuzzy to copy.

Good luck

many many thanks from all of you for talking me through the mirror enigmabeer
here's the result on my 1990 S3: Right/Left switch top row WHITE. BLACK/WHITE. BLACK/WHITE.
bottom row BLACK/YELLOW. BLACK/YELLOW. BROWN. (6 cables)

Joystick: BLUE RED
BLACK GREEN
ORANGE BLACK
When i operate them, they are a bit noisy. Maybe some WD40 would help or i can just start the engine. That way you can't or don't want to listen to anything else clapwavey
I'll enjoy a nice cold beer after all this.
thanks again boys

I've got exactly the same colours as you but I'm finding it hard to follow the order. The terminals on the switch aren't lined up in pairs. There's a terminal at either end and then four in the middle lined up symmetrically. Could you be a bit more specific about the order? Which colours go on the terminals at either end?

Cheers

Good question... I found my spare joystick and it's exactly as you say.

Weather isn't looking so crap at the weekend so I'll pull it out and look. I need to look at it all anyway since my left mirror has decided not to go in/out and not to be heated :\

Fantastic, I appreciate that. Would be great to hear how yours is wired up. Mine's starting to drive me up the wall. Going to get it into the workshop on saturday to have a proper look out of this perpetual cold and damp. Reckon the selector switch might be a bit duff so may be on the look out for a replacement. If anyone's got one I'd be interested....

Cheers again - hope to hear from you at the wkd
