Hello All

I have just bought a new (used) car and the car came with private plates.

Agreed to retain the plates in his name and I am filling out the V317.

The V317 states I must also send back a V62, but given I will be including the V5 anyway (requesting change of owner), do I really need to send back a V62? I suspect not.

Knowing the DVLA I would send it in any case. Logical reason rarely has any bearing on their rules.

You shoudnt be sending back the v5 the seller should be doing that
You should only have the tiny slip
You send the V317 assigning the plates to him and a v62 to get the original reg back
Assuming you have the right form numbers there. Sounds right but I havent checked

Now I am confused

When I spoke to the DVLA they told me that I fill out the V317, send back the MOT and V5 document, cheque for £105. The plate would be retained for the old owner and they would issue me a new V5/MOT/Tax disc in the new reg number. Sounds like this is wrong frown (Arghh hate the DVLA!)

The V62 is an application for a vehicle registration certificate.

No it may not be wrong
Another thread recently said something similar
DVLA might well be working around the system so you are able to swap a plate at sale.
Let us know what happens smile
If it doesnt work out now you can always assign it back after the new V5 has come through
DOnt forget to keep copies of everything! If in doubt try your local area office

No. If you've got the new keeper slip then DVLA will say that the vehicle has changed hands and the new registered keeper retains the registration.

You need to send the whole V5c back.

What are you talking about?
You don't have to send anything off to apply for the original registration back. One will be allocated by DVLA on completion of the retention. Normally, but not always, it is the original registration.

Why is this such a problem? (Genuine question, not being an arse)

DVLA said it was OK (and sounds like they may have a new process that allows everything to be done in one go), the V317 allows the reg to be "gifted" and I get the details back for the new plate.

Everything youve said there is where you take the reg off before selling the car. That can take weeks so the alternative way was to assign it back about 2 seconds after sale. For that you need the V62
Theres a new way creeping in where everything is sent to DVLA and they do it one go

You really don't have a clue what you're talking about do you.

A V62 is an application for a replacement V5c where the original has been lost, destroyed, not arrived in your name when you've bought a car. As far as the DVLA would be concerned at this point the car still has the original owners cherished registration on it.

Can you also explain what on earth the bit in bold means.

Of course, but bear in mind DVLA may have found a new way through this
The quick way to change your plate on sale used to be
You sell the car with your plate to the buyer ( suitable agreement in place)
You have to send off the V5c to DVLA, give the buyer the part 10 new keeper supplement
The buyer now needs to transfer the plate back to you
As DVLA hasnt yet posted them the new V5C the buyer has to use a V317 and a V62.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_...
With the V317 they can either transfer it back to your new car ( both of you sign the v317) or transfer it back to you as a grantee
The buyer sends those off

You shake hands and wait a few weeks for all the new tax discs to turn up

Quite frankly I lost the will to live through replying to your inane bullst incorrect ramblings.

If you don't know what you're talking about, clearly evident here and in most of your posts on PH, then just stop talking.

You needlessly spout absolute rubbish that confuses people asking for genuine help.

Highly unlikely as you're contradicting what everyone else says and generally making things up. Again.

Yet again you've failed to answer the question and are making things up. The buyer and seller do what together there and then?

I get the feeling youre just in here just to be an argumentative but never mind biggrin

The seller sells the car with the plate to the buyer
The buyer assigns the plate back to the seller
but as discussed earlier with the OP, DVLA might do that for you now.

What are you trying to do that youre interested?

How many cherished transfers/retention/ownership changes have you done and what was the most recent one?

OP. If you still need some PROPER advice let me know and I'll help you out.

More than you by the sound of it
What's your recommended procedure - just in case anyone else needs to know?

Which question???
