Apparently a very common problem, car goes into safety mode because intake temps become too high because the charge cooler pump has packed up.

I bought a replacement pump (Johnson CM30) which is commonly used rather than the standard Bosch pump, but it doesn't have anywhere to take the vacuum pipe which is fitted on the standard pump.

Just wondered if anyone has fitted one and can tell me what they did with the vacuum pipe? Thanks!

Solved the problem, so to help anyone that finds this thread via a search, the vacuum line isn't a vacuum, apparently it's actually just a 1/4" pipe that feeds hot air into the screen washer bottle so can be blanked off no problem.

The new pump works a treat, the car has come alive, sounds even better and is more responsive, ferocious in fact!

hi, did your source the replacement pump from somewhere in the uk ? I'd be interested to know & compare it against the price of a Merc Benz pump. I've fitted a few of these before & if as you say its a better upgrade it will be worth making a note of for the future.

I used Mack Engineering- much cheaper than I could find anywhere else after searching google and e bay ( approx £50 cheaper)

Alternatively, I have a spare CM30 that has only done approx 3000 miles ( reason the fuse went and the pump stopped working- so rather than check the fuse I just replaced the pump then only realised when the new pump would nt work either- there's a moral there somewhere!)

PM me if you or anyone else are interested -you can have it cheap as its just sat in its box in the garage gathering dust

They are a really common failure on the 55K engine, I had mine fail on my E55 within a few weeks of buying it!!, I think the newer Mercedes part is uprated too isn't it?, certainly never had another problem with mine, think it was about £400 for the pump from memory.

Hi, I bought the Johnson pump on ebay for £180 delivered, apparently it flows twice as much coolant as the standard pump (acccording to much googling) smile The electrical connections have to be made (it just comes with two wires) which I joined to the Merc wiring with bullet connectors. Can't fault it so far.
