Hi. Can I still use the Motorola phone that's connected to my 99 Jaguar XKR?

And...

Is there a way of connecting an iPhone 4 to the car stereo and hands fee? Ideally I would like to listen to my music off the iPhone, and be able to use the phone function on the stereo.

Am I trying to mate old technology with new?

Cheers

I'm interested in this too as I'm picking up my XKR next week and wanted to replace the standard radio cassette with something iPod compatible. I didn't want to have a load of external wires, so I've found this replacement and just looking to find a suitable facia adapter.

Does that mean you would be taking out the Jaguar unit and replacing it with the Sony one?

I know this sounds a bit fussy, but I was hoping there was a way you could do it without removing the existing stereo!

Do any of the hands-free units, like Parrot or Motorola stream music too?

Good question and this is what I'm currently investigating. Ideally I'd like to leave the current radio in, but then you would need some way to interface with it and AFAIK that's either a cassette adaptor or a fm radio attachment and then you have to have the ipod/iphone somewhere and be able to control it.

So if I can get a fascia adaptor then I think that's the neatest solution.

I've found a couple of other solutions: http://www.designxkr.co.uk/incar_entertainment.htm for example, but I've got no idea of cost. I'd assume it will run into the £100's though, perhaps even £1000+

The thing is, you can always put back in the factory fit radio and reconnect when selling if you want.

ive used these before to connect my iphone/iphone/ipad
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Cassette-Adapter-ada...
depending on luck i think, how good the quality of sound is
a very cheap way of doing it
in my XJR i have a jack to the phone with the connector taken off of the other end and wired into the cd player, you have to put a cd in and use that to fool the cd player into playing an ipod instead, but the cd player cant be used for anything else

first way is quickest cheapest but sound quality isnt always great

I put a Parrott 9200 into my 2002 S Type, gives me bluetooth and music from ipod, usb or line in. As long as you don't mind having a small extra screen, it's the easiest solution I could find and works a treat.

I was looking at the parrot hands-free kits on amazon earlier - big question, did you fit it yourself, or did you pay someone? If you payed them, how much am I looking at?

P.s. thanks for all the interest - this is my first ever jag, and I am so excited!

Fitted it myself and not difficult once I'd dismantled the car. If you want someone to do it, use a specialist mobile fitter rather than risk a Halfords type install. You're bound to need an adapter cable which they won't have in stock! Can't imagine it would take much more than two hours to do it properly. All the adaptor info is on the Parrot website I think, leads come from Autoleads and readily available.

Just noticed where you're based, if you want a hand I'm only based down the road South of Bath!

Thats very generous of you, thanks - I'm hopefully going to pick the car up next week (was meant to be weekend, but they are having a problem getting hold of a new windscreen - which had a crack in it, so will post some pics of the car and stereo as soon as I get it.

Just a thought.....the S audio system needed a code which wasn't with the car, easy enough to get as bought from a main dealer but worth checking out if your has/needs one.

You can put a SIM in the Motorola in the car but it needs to be a full size SIM and may only work with Vodaphone.

It is possible to splice an i-pod interface into the standard radio, I'm sure some have managed on the xkec.

Have a hunt around this product, remember Volvo and Jag were owned by Ford during the same period, it wouldn't be unlikely that there was commonality of audio component

There's a similar thread and a Youtube clip on the uk Volvo forum (mathews??- just google)

I believe the phone they used in some was a Motorola StarTAC 130 - this takes a "normal" small SIM in a tray on the side. It's GSM 900 only, which in the UK means Vodafone and I think O2 only - Orange are 1800MHz. It was a wonder of technology when I had one in 1998 or so, but today it's laughable (if still cool looking). They go for strong money 2nd hand to Jaguar owners looking to flash the custom Jaguar firmware onto them, as I found out when I sold mine last year.

A parrot is a better bet, but I've always found those units in the interior extremely unattractive and unsightly. In an XKR you could change the head unit for a unit with Bluetooth hands free built in? I did that with my X300.

I'm installing my new radio this weekend and will be disconnecting the phone. Can I ask where did you sell it?

Have you found a surround to mount a standard size radio? I have been looking but haven't come across a source yet so would be good to know if you have one.

I've got the surround from Jaguar. When I'm back later I'll give you the part numbers for all the bits.
