Just a quick question please.

Does anyone know an approximate average rate of pay for a driver who trots up and down the country delivering or collecting cars?

Thanks.

The guy that delivered my company car from Cardiff to Scotland told me that he was paid per mile covered. I can't remember the rate he said he was paid, but I'm pretty sure it was no more than £2 per mile. He got paid no accomodation costs, and would have to sleep in the car in a layby.

400 miles in a few hours? And also does £800 - fuel - expenses etc equal £800?

OP- are we talking on a recovery truck here or just driving the car?

I know people that do it for a living there are very little expenses and how slow do you drive?

I don't think it was as much as £2 though, I'm sure it was a lot less, possibly less than £1 a mile but I genuinely can't remember what he said he got. I do remember being shocked at how low paid it was.

He was self employed.

This comes up surprisingly often...

... IIRC the answer is usually that it's a crap job.

The company I used to deal with paid a daily rate which was quite poor probably not much above minimum wage at the time although they could claim back some expenses.

I friend of mine does this for a living he's skint and lives at home with his mum.

Just collecting cars on a one by one basis and driving them back to the dealership or delivering them to buyers.

I guess a per mile basis makes sense, I just wondered if there was an industry standard rate.

I'll ask one of my old man's friends - he took it up when he retired, as something to do.

400 miles at 25MPG is 16 gallons. Small expense? no, £100. And that's just fuel. You've got to feed yourself, sleep, somehow get back to base etc etc.

And how slow do I drive? slower than 134mph average.

The journey would have taken him about 5-6 hours. He used my company issued fuel card to fill the car up, but being a diesel, it would do at least 500 miles on a full tank anyway.

Your expenses would be accommodation unless you sleep in a car all night and do without a toilet and washing facilities.

Can we stop arguing about semantics please? I'm just looking for an idea so that, if I do get offered any work, I know roughly whether they are offering a fair rate.

Thanks smile

You don't get to choose your car. It's a worst case scenario.

Anyway...

There are better jobs for the money my friend does it because he was desperate at the time I haven't seen him for a few months last time I did he hated it.

On the flip side one of the drivers we employed at the VW dealership I worked at was retired and came back to do the job and loved the freedom.

The bloke that delivered my Z4 was a retired salesman he said he enjoyed it as a top up to his pension.

When I did agency work driving vans it was minimum wage stuff & that was when the min wage was about £4.10. I'd be really surprised if this sort of stuff paid any more than the current min wage + fuel (prob a card anyway) + train/bus fare back.

I appreciate it is not going to be highly paid but at the moment it is better than my savings getting lower and lower every month.

So, by you all saying Min Wage, are you telling me they pay per hour and not by mileage?

Al - pinged a mail out to someone who I know that does this. Have also asked if he has any contacts local to you.
