I only have 1 cig charger socket in my E46 coupe, has any one ever tried to fit an extra one, how easy is it?
Can it be fitted so that it powers from the ignition as opposed to the standard one which works even when the ignition is off.

What are you planning on powering from it?

At the moment only have 1 socket but the things I normally need to charge are the Tom Tom, blackberry, iPod touch, Bluetooth headset.
I could get a splitter but don't really want to do that would prefer to have a separate socket.

You could pick up the ignition live wire at the back of the stereo, the devices you're looking to power don't have large current draws, or go directly to the ignition switch.

Ensure you use a 5amp inline fuse in each case.

Remove your stereo (h/u), locate the violet/grey stripe wire in the h/u wiring loom, goes to a rectangular plug with 13 round pins in the back of your h/u.

That's your ign+ , for your ground either make your own or tap into the brown wire on the same loom.

The above is all from memeory, so test the wires with a multimeter or test light first, I could not tell you without looking whcih wires to go to if you wanted to connect directly to the ignition swithch.

HTH.

ETA, if you really are not competent with electrics then you should go and see and auto electrican.

I have an "extended socket pack" or whatever BMW called it in my M3. This means that I have two extra 12V sockets in a plastic housing behind the armrest, on the transmission tunnel. Might be the most elegant(!) and OE solution for you?

I think you can just attach an extra socket to any 12v line in the car. Clearly it's better to do this on the same circuit as the other cigarette lighter, so if you blow a fuse it won't cause E.g. the headlights to fail.

I did it in my car (not a BMW, admittedly) by simply buying an extension cord (something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cigarette-Lighter-Socket... cutting the male end off and wiring it up in parallel to the existing OEM centre-console socket. Then you can obviously re-route the cable / socket to somewhere else. I have mine in the driver's footwell to supply power to my sat nav. It works perfectly.

The only thing I would say is that if you're planning on using it for anything that draws a lot of power, I wouldn't use both sockets at once. I probably wouldn't use it to light cigarettes, either (does anyone still do this??). But for charging two phones at the same time, for example, it works fine.

I was about to mention this, it's an option i wish I had, wonder if there is a retrofit DIY floating about.

If I understand your question correctly I think they're permanent. They work without requiring a key in the ignition, exactly the same as the normal cigarette socket.
