Just wondering if Simpson helmets like the Diamondback (The Stig helmet) are legal for road/bike use? Or are they more for track cars?

Avoid on a bike, they are as draughty as hell, mine left my eyes streaming to the point of being dangerous..

They do look really smart but I wouldnt repeat the purchase.

I don't like 'em, they're far too heavy.

I've got a Bandit upstairs; looks great, bloody awful to wear on a bike.... noisy, draughty, visor an inch thick that you need a crowbar to open.... still, if I ever get my head stuck in a furnace the nomex lining will help.... smile

Are there any other brands that have that similar look, where it goes up at the 'nose'?

laugh I'm talking race helmets here, Don't have a bike. I didn't buy one in the end based on the specs online- Glad I didn't because Dad gave me his old crash helmet afterwards. ISTR the Simpson was about 1400g and I reckon the 'Stand21' helmet dad gave me is barely over 1000g. Doesn't sound like much but you can multiply the difference several times over once you bring 'G'-forces into the equation...
Anyway it's high weight compared to other helmets was the final nail in the coffin, I really wanted one for the looks but it was over my budget and all the reviews I read criticised the aperture opening size etc.

I don't know if Craft still exist but their RX7 (IIRC) was the equivalent of the Simpson Bandit. It must be knocking 10yrs since my brother bought his though so the models / names will no doubt be different, that's if they're still about at all.

Had one, never steamed up as it was so draughty. Could watch rain droplets blowing up & down the inside of the visor. Never sayit was heavy though.

Worries me that these are really a car racing helmet designed to work within a roll cage etc rather than sliding/bouncing down the road. Not to mention the insurance implications if you were to suffer a head inury whilst wearing a non-approved helmet.

I replaced mine with a Shoei X8R which was a far superior helmet for bike riding albeit not as posey.

None of the recent ones look as radical as the Simpson Star Wars lid looked in it's day.

+1 on the Roof helmets, fairly quiet & nicely finished.

Craft still exist, nice comfy helmets, reasonably light, fairly quiet and not draughty.
£199 upwards for their simpson lookalikes in my local dealer.
I've a VR7 and an RX9 which are both due replacing with another craft when i get a couple of quid spare.

I have always fancied one and they do one now that is meant to be better for on a bike..

http://www.simpson-helmets.eu/contents/en-uk/p7415...

I don't know how good it would be but I'm tempted!
None of the other Bandit lookalikes look quite as good as the real thing IMO.

I have a Simpson Diamondback that I use both on my bike and in the car. You need to try one on as the visor aperture is tiny and not really suited for riding sports bikes. I use mine in the Lotus for track days and the Harley on the road. I fine it really comfortable and not at all heavy, but as with any helmet, try them on for fit before buying.
