Hi, Could anyone give me the rough dimensions of a Mk1/Mk2 hardtop? The missus is hoping to replace her Herald with an MX5 in the spring and wants a hard top for winter - but the car will spend most of its life with it off. I'm currently shelving out the garage and just want to leave a space big enough for an upended lid...
Any info' much appreciated, thanks, John.

I'd like to know if it would go in the back of an Octavia Hatchback or Audi 80 Estate!

I would have thought it's only fractionally bigger than a soft top. Use that as a guide and you won't be far wrong.

Just measured mine - Length 1170mm (+ attachment clips 50mm?) x H 400 x W 1280 - all approx.
Maybe a set of roof bars in reserve just in case?
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.

If I had the money for a hard top burning a hole in my pocket is replace the vinyl soft top for mohair instead. Just as cosy as a hard top and you can still drop the top whenever you want smile

Thanks for the replies - if it was destined to be mine I wouldn't bother with a hard top, I rarely drive my soft top with the top up regardless of the conditions. Other half would like it for the worst of the winter and security for when she visits her mother where it has to be parked in a slightly iffy area.
Thanks for taking the time/effort to measure up - much appreciated.

I've never been in an MX5 with a hard top or a mohair hood. My car still has the original vinyl and I've never felt the need for a hard top. The hood is down too often through winter, possibly more than in summer!

I found my 5 a much more comfortable place to be with the hard top on.

Its not the boot space that's the problem its the size of the boot opening. I couldn't get one into my XC90 so you might struggle with those cars.

If it's just to pick it up, why not take the MX5? They definitely fit on those wink
