If you own any Ford Transits, have a look and check out your vans!

We have about 7 Transits all LWB 190 models, from 2009 onwards and shortly after our 09 van went out of warranty that a load of rust was coming through where the drivers door shuts on the door retainer/closer thingy. We also noticed that our 2010 van was exactly the same rust starting and also our 2011 van has too. It's clearly a major manufacturing problem and Ford have agreed to repair the 2010 van by bonding a striker plate on where the rust is and claiming it is £997.74 worth of repair!
What they will not do, even thought the 2009 was only 3 months out of warranty, is repair this one FOC and have kindly offered to repair it at a discounted rate of £500. I threw all the threats under the sun that we buy 2-3 per year and will not be buying any more and of course it counted for nothing.

Has anyone else had this problem. Have you had them repaired by Ford? With what I am being told how they plan to repair them, it will not last anyway as the rust is being the door catch.

I shall write in to them as the numpty on the phone only knew how to say no and was clearly a robot. I doubt I will get anywhere, but if anyone else can add any hope or ammunition, please do. In a few years time, this will be dangerous if not repaired!

That doesn't appear to be a rust problem per se. It looks like the body panel which holds the srtiker plate is flexing and the cracks are then rusting.

We have similar problems with 57 plate onwards Peugeot Experts. Various body panels flex and crack with tell tale rusting following soon after. On top of engine, gearbox, driveshaft, seat and suspension problems, we have now moved away from Peugeot. Still got around two hundred on fleet though!

Interesting - I'm on my 2nd Jumbo at work and at 2 years old is utterly rust free.

The last one went at five years old and had some cosmetic rust on panel joints on the roof but that was it.

nerd The Jumbo is made in Turkey though, while all (?) the rest that are sold in the UK are currently made at Southampton. This may partly explain it?

Very interesting. We have just bought 3 jumbos this year, so time will tell. All the rest we have which are problematic are 190 LWB's!

Any excuse for some van porn!

Driver who collected the old one said it was the cleanest 5 year old lease van he'd ever seen - we like to look after them!

Good, there's nothing worse than hiring a van to move a new mattress or something, and having the interior covered in cement dust or manure as usually seems to happen to me!

I've seen alot of Transits but never seen an issue there. The SWB vans built in Southampton are not finished as well, less paint, less seam sealer and stonechip, and more inconsistent panel gaps. Still wouldnt have another van, I love my Mk7.

My Transit is 26 months old, just gave it a good wash last weekend and the sills are starting to rust, bubbling through the paint.

The chassis suspension hangers rusted in the first 6 months of ownership.

Not really something you can keep a long time are they.

Anyone think the new shape will be any better ?

They are absolutely crap. We have 7 Transits ranging from 2009 through to March 2013. I would never buy another. Ford have been totally dismissive of the fact that they are all rusting. They have repaired all of them with the front door shuts and rear doors too now. Never known anything like it.

Have moved over to Fiats this year, purely due to payload. We used to run all Mercedes, but by the time you insulate them with refrigeration, they have so little payload it is unpractical for us.

I have found rust on new ones!

That striker plate I agree looks like a fatigue failure causing cracking which then has rusted. Which is why I suggest the official repair is an overpanel. It would be interesting to see the tech info for the repair part wink

Mine's still fine after nearly 3 years, it's a cracking van.

I've heard alot of bad press about the MK7 vans, have to say my trusty MK6 is now 10 years old and the only rust is stone chips and some dints by the rear doors, I guess with the facelift they used thinner steel for the door striker plate area and crap paint to boot.

I guess the plate they add stops it flexing, but they will have alot of work to fix all the rust around the catch.

Paint it just before you sell the vans I guess?
