got a double garage which i want to replace the doors with hormann or carteck electric sectional doors. had a few quotes and its hard to get sense out of some of the firms they all seem to know each other and have plenty to say about each other.

horman are suppose to be good, carteck are suppose to be slightly better.

does anyone have any fitted, any issues etc

thanks

Iirc Hörmann just make the gear, not the doors, but I may have misremembered. I used a local company who fitted Hörmann kit and it has been brilliant, my dad also had their kit and it worked flawlessly for years.

I seem to recall that Hörmann's stuff tends to be centre operated while another similar company has the mechanism to one side but I can't remember their name - not the other na,e you mention.

If you live in the SE, we used these guys.

I've got a Hormann double garage door fitted-it's the largest width available (around 16 ft I think). It's centre mounted, double skinned and I've had it fitted for around 18 months now with no issues whatsoever. Total cost to remove central pillar, fit a RSJ and have the door fitted was in the region of about £2,900. I'm in South Wales so not sure what effect that will have on prices. It took 1 1/2 days to fit.

Forgot to say, insulated sectional doors are fantastic, no leaves in garage, stays warm and dry, would fit them again in a heartbeat smile

thanks all, i have the two garage doors with a centre pillar but was quoted 4.5k to remove it.... yeah right so i actually only need one to be electric for the car, the other door very rarley gets used so potentially i coudl save a bit by just having one thats electric...

quotes at the moment are around 3k. the trouble is one company said that they will remove the wooden door frames and install hormann powder coated steel frames to match the doors, all the other companys said that they would clad the wooden frames in upvc so it sits flush with the doors. the frame thats there is in good condition but not sure as i still havent had the quote in writing and one of the other firms said its a tactic by that frm that they come round, quote the qorld but doesnt put it in the writing which has put me off them, when i phoned to say can i have a written quotation the guy said what do you need me to put down in writing as it will be the same as we have already discussed. so as you can see not really keen now. lol
who would have thought garage doors would have been some much trouble.

You could write them a letter to place your order and confirm the price in that. If they don't accept then you know it was a scam.

yeah it just puts me off when people operate that way, all the others have submitted written quotations and it makes me wonder knowing how expensive steel is that they can fit a full steel frame around the garage door instead of clad the original wooden one for what amounts to £300 more expensive..

That seems a really steep price. I am sure it only cost 1500 for the door, mechanism, frame, installation, everything (it was a new garage with a hole in the wall basically!). This was only 4 years ago...

I think I rang them because they were very local to me and I got a good vibe from them when I went in. I think they were a family outfit. Didn't meet the fitters as I was at work and my builder dealt with them but they did a great job and did a bit of adaption as needed. Had no problems with the installation at all.

There was a thread a few months with more reasonable prices and there is a PHer (in the second post) who does garage doors. I've got a feeling there are other Phers in this business too.

There is some discussuion about my Clopay door, but it does everything I can think of that a garage door should do! There's no frame at all with mine, the door seals against rubber strips at the sides screwed to the brick and top and has a rubber tube on its bottom edge.

I recently had one single (2.5m) and one double (5m) Hormann insulated sectional door installed on my garage. Two frames, fully automated, woodgrain finish etc etc.

Quality is spot-on. Operation is silent and faultless. Total price was a little over £4k, but £700-odd of this was for extra framework to true the levels (uprights were out of plumb 4" top to bottom)

If you're anywhere near the South, I can give you name of the suppliers.

Just adding to the Hormann fan club. Previous owner fitted them in my old house. They must have been in for about 10 years and no issues at all. I'll be buying some when I finally get round to building my new garage.

Another Hormann fan, ours has been in situ for 15 years or so, had a problem with one spring snapping, which the engineer had never seen before, after about 10 years - it's opposite spring still appears fine.

Yep, sectional doors, take up the least amount of space, and electric with remotes.

Do you have a pic of them, I only ask as,I'm interested about the frame as that's causing the most issues at the moment, did you use the original frame?

thanks
