Pic Of The Week: McLaren P1

Hot weather testing for McLaren P1 delivers a spectacular set of images

There's been no shortage of hype, sightings and bluster about the McLaren P1 in the months since its official unveiling. But for all its amazing stats and performance there's been a thoughtful rather than ecstatic response to this personification of the new age of the high-tech hybrid hypercar.

A slow burner perhaps but one that's starting to gather momentum, both with rumours of sub seven-minute 'ring laps and yesterday's Time For Tea? testing video. All in the week McLaren celebrates its 50th birthday too.

So we've picked one of the shots accompanying that video as our pic of the week, hoping that the Bunsen burner flame will be a reality and not just a bit of photoshopped artistic licence. Because, for all the amazing technology, we want the P1 to truly follow in the footsteps of the F1 and win our hearts as well as our heads. Call us juvenile and easily pleased but big flames out of the back of a Batmobile-like central exhaust are a step in the right direction!

TV widescreen (16:9)

lord but the back end of that car is a mess. stupid lights, open mesh, diffusers, pointless central exhaust (surely it should have exhausts blowing the diffusers?) - it's almost as messy as a modern F1 car....

but maybe that was the point.

I really find the exact opposite about it. I think it's beautiful and most definitely the car I'd choose out of these next generation supercars from Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren.

Jay Leno took one for a spin for the Sunday Times last week.

Unfortunately you have to be a subscriber but it is a good read. Nice video too, including a visit to the factory then a hoon around Dunsfold.

He immediately placed an order for delivery early next year.

The F40 looks like it is made from flat panels of plywood in a shed. The P1 in real life looks like a visitor from another world. Especially in black at night. Something I will never forget standing next to. The rear lights alone are pure theatre. Stunning machine.

I saw an LHD grey/carbon version on '12' plates yesterday on the Woking Road. Looked amazing.

Thanks for that, PH, the "portrait" wallpaper should say "2 year old smartphone", that 960x640 looks terrible on mine!

I saw one on my commute home from work a few fridays ago. Absolutely EPIC.

Excuse the soundtrack (didn't have time to turn the stereo off, so the vid is accompanied by Daft Punk), but here it is, in all it's real life glory!
